11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 21:40 Are we talking AGAIN about Canadian Ballet?
No relationship at all, unless you are talking to Twolow and then that must be a different conversation entirely. :}
Probie: No sir
Odd, I had this happen before and I thought it would be easy pickings and while someone playing had been there, they didn't make the connection.
Another clue. The city where this was taken is also known for it's BBQ.
And I checked, if you did a google image search on this picture, it would not lead you to it.

11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 21:58 Not Lexington, not a Casino, rather a company headquarters.
Clue: My Wife's birthday was Sunday. I got something from here for her.
probes 11th Oct 2011, 22:06 Sans Soucie glass?
I meant 'glass by Sans Soucie' actually. (And ma'am, actually.)
11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 22:07 Not known for glass.
Women are more likely customers of this business than men, although men do shop there at least once or twice a year.
RegDep 11th Oct 2011, 22:09 It would otherwise be Kentucky Fried Chicken Headquarters, but the Wife's birthday present would not exactly fit in (I hope for your sake).
Long Beach you said you live in?
11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 22:10 I am in Long Beach, but this place is not, although I would consider them worldwide.
I'm running out of clues.
Probie: Noted, thank you ma'am.
The punchline to an old joke would give you a clue.
RegDep 11th Oct 2011, 22:16 But the challenge is in California?
11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 22:19 It is considered worldwide, but the headquarters is where the picture was taken, and that is not in California.

Anyone?
11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 22:29 So, Open House I suppose.
Hallmark Visitors Center and Company Headquarters; Kansas City Missouri
The clues:
Friends have sent me greetings from there: It’s a Greeting Card Company
Crazy short women - should have got one: From the song Kansas City “Got some crazy little women there and I’m gonna get me one”. Hallmark Headquarters is in Kansas City
Something Royal: Home of the Kansas City Royals Baseball Team. Also, a Crown is part of the Hallmark Logo
Wish you were here: Common Greeting Card writing.
BBQ: Kansas City is famous for it.
“Instinctively, a lot of people look at the back first.” The trademark is on the back of the greeting card. A commercial suggested that people will turn the card over to see if it is a Hallmark Card before reading the card itself.
“My Wife's birthday was Sunday. I got something from here for her.” Her Birthday Card.
Women are more likely customers of this business than men, although men do shop there at least once or twice a year. Pretty obvious; birthday or anniversary card.
Old Joke Punchline: Read the card, read the card.

probes 11th Oct 2011, 22:30 Isn't the 'producer' of the glass panel (?) known (at all), just the place?
OK, the answers are here already. Though - made by whom? A beautiful thing.
RegDep 11th Oct 2011, 22:32 Well, Kansas City was the only one I got right along the line.
From Wiki
Kansas City-style barbecue is characterized by its use of different types of meat (including pulled pork, pork ribs, burnt ends, smoked sausage, beef brisket, beef ribs, smoked/grilled chicken, smoked turkey, and sometimes fish), a variety attributable to Kansas City's history as a center for meat packing in the US. Hickory is the primary wood used for smoking in KC, while the sauces are typically tomato based with sweet, spicy and tangy flavor profiles. Burnt ends, the flavorful pieces of meat cut from the ends of a smoked beef or pork brisket, are popular in many Kansas City-area barbecue restaurants.
Night.
11Fan 11th Oct 2011, 22:35 Probie, I believe this is what you were after?

RegDep. Didn't see where you mentioned Kansas City or I would have given you an acknowledgement.
No, I didn't. I dropped it after Lexington and you saying that the challenge is south of Philadelphia (well KC IS a few miles more south).
But I am not complaining. A beautifully conducted challenge with clues. I just missed the clues (as non-American), but can identify all of them now after the fact.
This calls for a story: When I was the first (and only) time in KC in the mid 80s, I went in the evening into the hotel bar on top of the hotel and asked a vodka-martini (I was on an unhealthy mode at the time). The short and nice barmaid (are they called barmaids in KC?) brought it, looked in my eyes, smiled and said "Youwannarunatab?". I said, "Sorry, I do not understand." She looked in my eyes, smiled and said (slowly this time), "You must be from out of town".
svhar 12th Oct 2011, 10:25 Good morning.
I am more and more fond of this game here. I find it interesting, educating and challenging. Thanks to the intelligence and courtesy of you all.
I would be grateful if anybody could help me with a few daft questions.
1. I seem to be able to insert a picture with an internet address. Will this address be visible to other users?
2. If I save a picture from the internet, it comes with a default name. Saved in my computer I can rename it. Can I rename a picture within a post?
3. Can I resize a picture within a post? If so, what is the preferred size in kilobytes, as not to disrupt the pagewidth of small screen users?
4. Can I insert a picture from my own computer?
Thank you all for a nice game.

RegDep 12th Oct 2011, 11:19 Hi svhar:
You can start here:
http://www.pprune.org/spectators-balcony-spotters-corner/203481-image-posting-pprune-guide.html#post2284110
And then you can read these at your leisure: http://www.pprune.org/aviation-history-nostalgia/203154-image-posting-pprune-some-tips-you.html#post2279455
The first and main thing is to get an image-hosting site (I have a Photobucket, just the free account, but others swear other names). In Photobucket you can resize and crop your pictures, and do some elementary "photoshopping" (pardon me the misuse of trademark).
And then: when in doubt, just ask someone.
Have fun.

Mont Ventoux, France. Tom Simpson (1937–1967) was an English road racing cyclist who died of exhaustion on the slopes of Mont Ventoux during the 13th stage of the Tour de France in 1967. There is a granite memorial to Simpson near the spot where he died, paid for by British cyclists.

Tommy Simpson memorial threw me as that is close to where he died.
RegDep 12th Oct 2011, 16:22 Correct. The grave of the Finnish Grand Prix motor cyclist Jarno Saarinen in Turku, Southern Finland, where he was born in 1945. He died in an accident, racing in Monza, Italy, in 1973.
An interesting side story is that the father of Italian F1 driver Jarno Trulli, born 1974, was a big fan Jarno Saarinen, and named his son after him.
Over to you Wodrick :ok:.

The US connection? Much of Southern Devon was used a training area for US forces prior to D-Day. There's a memorial to the dead on the seafront at Slapton along with a recovered Sherman Tank.

lomapaseo 17th Oct 2011, 03:26 Long Island but I'm too lazy to google-earth the route
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 04:19 Normally a safe guess, because that's where I did most of my
small plane flying.
But not this photo.
Rollingthunder 17th Oct 2011, 05:11 I note the Daily Telegraph is having a running "Where on Earth" competition. Coincidense?
svhar 17th Oct 2011, 08:28 Lake Arthur, Pennsylvania?
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 13:33 Not in Penna. Or any of the 57.
Bushflier 17th Oct 2011, 13:59 Looks like weymouth Inlet, Canadian arctic
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 16:36 Does look like many places in North America.
But isn't.
Hartington 17th Oct 2011, 17:56 How about a reservoir in the UK?
I think I've eliminated Chew Valley and Cheddar. Bewl Water?
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 19:37 Not in UK, but much closer.
There is, at least in my own mind, a somewhat tenuous aviation connection to a spot very near to this place, just off camera to the bottom right, if memory serves.
Is it New Jersey?? Pass over lots of places like that on the southern approach to Newark..
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 20:48 Not in US. Not in North America. Agree it does look like a LOT of places in the eastern US.
Sirikit 17th Oct 2011, 20:59 Oi! Have we done New Zealand Kerikeri yet?
Or...........
Croatia?:p
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 21:05 No. Have said UK was closest so far.
Hint - a pilot whom everybody knows was involved nearby.
Sirikit 17th Oct 2011, 21:06 Ok....Ok! Just warming up.
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 21:12 Hint - a pilot whom everybody knows was involved nearby.
How about this?
Approximately 26 hours into his flight, Corrigan claimed to have finally dropped down out of the clouds and noticed that he was over a large body of water. Knowing that it was too early to have reached the Pacific Ocean, Corrigan looked down at his compass--and because there was now supposedly more light to see by--suddenly noticed he "had been following the wrong end of the magnetic needle." Within a short time, Corrigan was over Ireland. He landed at Baldonnel Airport, in Dublin, after a 28-hour, 13-minute flight.
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 22:04 Next hint -- the 'pilot everyone knows' is typically known by three names.
The middle is Gary.
And that....should give it away, almost.
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 22:14 Russian things here to get in first: Degtyarsk, Russia? Still looking at maps.
Francis Gary Powers by the way.
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 22:23 Differing reports of crash location. Checking to see how far that is from my other guess.
Powers’ aircraft was badly damaged, and crashed near Sverdlovsk, deep inside Soviet territory.
finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 22:25 You definitely have the right pilot.
Hint intolves a bridge......
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 22:28 Well, it wasn't his death. He was in a chopper crash here in California. Gotta keep looking. :ugh:
It's the prisoner swap, wasn't it? Glienicke bridge
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 22:35 Found it. Hang on
Krampnitz is on the top of the picture and the lake is called the Krimpnitzsee near Neu Fahrland.

finfly1 17th Oct 2011, 23:01 You win. You win. Deedly Dee.
11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 23:03 Cool. Here's an easy one.

11Fan 17th Oct 2011, 23:50 Pull my finger is the current challenge. Stepping away for an hour.
finfly1 18th Oct 2011, 00:29 Agree absolutely.
The picture was simply to show you 'the bridge'...not a challenge.
Fesch 18th Oct 2011, 00:32 Hands Across the Divide Monument, londonderry, derry UK
11Fan 18th Oct 2011, 00:32 Understood sir. As you and I were the only ones here at that moment, it was more for the benefit of others that may join in after.
Cheers,

Fesch 18th Oct 2011, 01:02 :) Well guess what, I am sitting in europe (that's a hint) I am watching the jets vs miami right now and I am accomodating to the next nightshift
11Fan 18th Oct 2011, 01:50 Got the whole world, in your hands. :ok:
Fesch 18th Oct 2011, 02:15 11Fan, you made me laugh :)
Ok, I have to go to sleep now... I'll check if somebody's got it, first thing in the morning!
I give you a hint:
It's commonly known as the ... ...... , not the green train but the ... ...... (WYSIWYG)
The common name of the bridge is enough, the full name would be better although not necessary , but I want the city ant the country
visibility3miles 18th Oct 2011, 06:52 The Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogin-Charlotte-Bréck, French: Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, German: Großherzogin-Charlotte-Brücke) is a road bridge in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg.

And of course: Good morning :).
PS: Yours in Norway? Somewhere out of Hammerfest?
Capetonian 18th Oct 2011, 07:24 #6430 : The bungee jumping bridge on Lake St. Croix, Var, France.
Am about to board a flight. If I'm correct (presumptuous so and so aren't I!) then OH as I'll be off the air up in the air for the next few hours.
RegDep 18th Oct 2011, 07:26 Bungee sounds more Indian than French to me, though. And it is not Hammerfest. The one I was thinking of is a suspension bridge…..
Exascot 18th Oct 2011, 07:29 No probs RegDep. We will deal with yours at the same time. I was sure that you would get my bridge very quickly no one correct yet.
Exascot 18th Oct 2011, 07:57 6431: Austria? Not the same house though.

(BTW, you bridge is Chenab River Railway Bridge in Jammu-Kashmir, India, but I won't tell anybody.)
svhar 18th Oct 2011, 08:18 Cecilienhof Palace, Potsdam, Germany.
And good morning to you all.
RegDep 18th Oct 2011, 08:27 Good morning svhar, and so correct you are.
Cecilienhof, the Tudor style house of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, not far away from Glienickebrügge (see a few challenges back). The place of the Potsdam Conference of the Biggies in 1945. The future job of the Glienickebrügge was, in a bit convoluted way though, decided there.
Cecilienhof was the last palace built by the Hohenzollern family. Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany had it erected for his son Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany and the crown prince's wife Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The house was designed by Paul Schultze-Naumburg to look like an English Tudor country house and built between 1914 and 1917. Its design was based on a house called 'Bidston Court' (later 'Hillbark') on the Wirral Peninsula.
Over to you. You can have my bridge too (if it was correct…)
svhar 18th Oct 2011, 08:39 Thank you Reg. It seems to me that you are correct about the bridge. I don't know if we should wait for Exascot to confirm it. What do you think?

sabredog 18th Oct 2011, 08:52 The Perlan, Reykjavik,Iceland.
RegDep 18th Oct 2011, 08:53 I am sure Exascot won't mind. He's probably sunbathing on his terrace…..
And I think he has walked by your challenge once or twice.
Edit: See!
svhar 18th Oct 2011, 08:56 This was obviously too easy. Indeed it is Perlan. Over to you, Sabredog.
Exascot 18th Oct 2011, 08:58 And I think he has walked by your challenge once or twice.
Sabredog seems to be correct but I do not recall seeing it. Probably in the pub drinking extremely expensive beer :(
RegDep 18th Oct 2011, 09:08 I thought you are a frequent walker in Iceland, Exascot.
Exascot 18th Oct 2011, 09:33 No not in Iceland only Greece and Botswana. Used to do a bit of trading there. The handling agent would find a bottle of duty free scotch in the boot of his car when we arrived. We would then find a fresh salmon in the hold on departure. All most odd. :hmm:

Cpt_Pugwash 18th Oct 2011, 22:51 Re Hartingtons post #6380
"It's illuminated carnival tonight in the village. Back about 2130 at a guess."
A slight divergence from the thread I know, but this has been puzzling me. Not THE Village, I assume, and illuminated carnivals are mainly a West Country event ( WL will tell me Kendal has one, but that is in September) . I am only aware of three carnivals on the 15th, and Taunton and Okehampton are too big to be villages, so perhaps Hartingtons location is Castle Cary & Ansford. Then again, it could be a smaller Devon village ......
jet_noseover 18th Oct 2011, 23:15 svhar, you got it! :ok:
Took a while to find it or knew the place?
This picture was taken a month ago while following the American Rugby Team and strayed..:)

con-pilot 19th Oct 2011, 01:31 Not really a lurker, cause I really don't know a lot of these places, but this one I do know.
Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas on Paradise Island. Flew through that opening in the middle I did in a 727.
Okay, no I didn't. Never been there actually. Open house, I'll have something next time.
jet_noseover 19th Oct 2011, 01:37 ...And Connie just spoilt it for a lurker. Naughty step for you for the next 2 hours and broccoli for dinner for the next two days! Bad boy!

jet_noseover 19th Oct 2011, 02:04 enjoying the cocktail hour after a light dinner
Make the best of it then. There will be brussel sprouts for the nex 2 days for you,,,and 5 days if you do not post the next challenge.

con-pilot 19th Oct 2011, 02:36 Okay. oops, see 11Fan got it, I'll post something later.
finfly1 19th Oct 2011, 02:37 Somewhere, a few layers down, I have some photos taken of Paradise Island around 1967. In fact, I flew there on a Pan Am plane the day the war broke out and there was a massive slowdown at JFK airport.
When I dig them out, I'll post one or two, not as a challenge but just a contrast. There was not even a bridge to the island at that time. Cafe Martinique, recently popularised in a James Bond film, was accessable only by boat.
jet_noseover 19th Oct 2011, 02:49 11Fan..looks like Chicago when filming one of them bat thingies.
11Fan 19th Oct 2011, 02:53 Not Chicago, but a connection. Chicago and this place have something in common.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm107/APC11Fan/Challange9.jpg
jet_noseover 19th Oct 2011, 03:00 Hm, looks like chicago marina cities and the trump tower in the back ground though. I live here, so similarity is astounding. ,,,And they were filming the "bat man" here as well in the lower Wacker Drive while I was watching it from the Holiday Inn across the street. You know, the Merchendise Mart..;)
11Fan 19th Oct 2011, 03:54 Giving it away. On the road at 0600 so here it is and Open House after. The connection of this place and Chicago: Boeing.

svhar 19th Oct 2011, 09:53 This could be any of thousands of villages in the world.
Would anyone care to guess in what country this is, based on architecture, vegetation and etc?
http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i457/svhar/057.jpg
RegDep 19th Oct 2011, 10:01 Interesting link with Cuba, recently…….
The country, I mean…..
Capetonian 19th Oct 2011, 10:02 South/Central Europe, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, possibly Italy or Austria but my guess would be for part of the ex-Yugoslavia.
RegDep 19th Oct 2011, 10:05 Architecture sort of germanic, so surely not in Germany nor any neighbouring country, right svhar?
svhar 19th Oct 2011, 10:12 None of those, so far. Keep guessing a bit more.
RegDep 19th Oct 2011, 10:17 Architecture is more like from Southern Germany, maybe on the mountains of the East side of Rhine opposite to Alsace.
Roofs indicate lots of sun and rain, more than in Germany.
German colony in South America?
svhar 19th Oct 2011, 10:20 You are getting warmer, RegDep.

Capetonian 19th Oct 2011, 10:22 It might be one of those villages in Southern Chile or Argentina which were founded by Germanic people, Frutillar, San Carlos de Bariloche .... for example.
Capetonian 19th Oct 2011, 10:24 Reg you @<hidden>&*&% - well done! Beat me to it! And you were spot on.
svhar 19th Oct 2011, 10:31 Reg, you are right.
It is an interesting place with an interesting history. One could easily think one was in Germany or Austria. Signs in German. German food and beer. People with blond hair and blue eyes.
In the middle of Venezuela. Incredible place.
