Just to move this along a bit, the architecture is inspired by the Himilayas, but the location is far away. Here are a couple more hints. The palm trees may help find the location, and there are unseen mountains in the background. Every building, and there are many, has the same, distinct architecture.

Matari 18th Sep 2011, 15:15 Correct, Sabredog.
UT El Paso (UTEP) architecture was the inspiration of the wife of the first dean of the old Texas School of Mines. Around 1917 she saw a National Geographic article about Bhutan, and convinced her husband to design the campus in the Bhutanese style.
Today the campus is a beautiful testament to that vision. The first Bhutanese students to study in the US came to El Paso, and today UTEP remains the most popular campus for students from Bhutan.

RegDep 24th Sep 2011, 15:17 v3m,
how do you pronounce "Iz "objektivnih" razloga postavljamo.."?
I don't. I dont know how to pronounce serbian (which I think the language is called). It is just a quote from the site that features the picture (and the blogger's location reads: Mauritius, soon or later).
The GoogleTranslate says it means something like … "for the sake of objectivity I post a picture of the old and new tower (of the) Directorate of Civil Aviation of the Republic of Serbia".

visibility3miles 25th Sep 2011, 02:20 OAK is correct for the second pix, the other is slightly south.
I think the phrase "Do you see a large tank?" was used sometimes.
Once, I was cleared to land at an OAK general aviation runway by flying from the southwest over the SF Bay and the main runway. Spooky to be the only one in that airspace.
sisemen 25th Sep 2011, 04:21 Once did a delivery to Romsey Airfield in Victoria, Australia and elected to land on Rwy 33. Unfortunately, local knowledge had it that the only permissible landing direction on that strip was Rwy 15 because of the presence of the Australian Army Proving Ground at Monagetta tracks of which were within 300 metres of the threshold (ERSA didn't - and still doesn't - mention that fact).
So, the question "Can you see a large tank" was quite apposite - a feckin great Leopard tank with a plume of dust behind it and an equally feckin great gun pointed straight at me!
visibility3miles 25th Sep 2011, 06:40 Not the sort of tank I had in mind, but times change. :ooh:

Eastern side of the Rockies looking West.
I've always wondered what people traveling in covered wagons across Kansas first thought when they saw the Rockies arise and loom over the horizon.

seacue 26th Sep 2011, 20:28 Yes, Mr. Miles. Those are the 5 Flatirons in Boulder Mountain Park, Boulder, Colorado.
I, too, wonder what the explorers and then settlers thought when they saw the Rockies looming up. By 1850 or so, when my great grandfather went to California, they knew of an easier route though southern Wyoming. I have the binoculars which he is said to have carried on that trip.
The woman's name is NOT Susan. The bus probably goes to the depot in downtown Boulder. The picture was taken in early 1959. The street in the foreground is Baseline Rd ... exactly 40 degrees north latitude.

This is not a control issue. I try to be polite although I get confused sometimes with what is the question?

No way would I have guessed the precise geographic location (without researching Giggle for a building that was repeated at many similar locations.

Jetsy, does it leave us Thailand, or do we need to head to South America? You don't say it's New Zealand (Cape: that was a second thought).
Capetonian 29th Sep 2011, 16:57 Reg : What I meant was that, as far as I know, Malaysia is, in its entirety, in the Northern Hemisphere, and our quizmaster tells us that this lovely beach is in the Southern Hemisphere : Not Australia, but the hemisphere is correct.

visibility3miles 1st Oct 2011, 19:55 RegDep I don't know where it is. Aside from a wide swath down Mexico, Central America, and points south, try anyplace that an excursion from a cruise ship going through the Suez Canal is likely to visit or could reach.
It does not look like Egypt, Italy, or Greece, especially with the buddha(ish) figure. Turkey and India are possible, maybe (doubtful), but I've never been there so don't know.
Asia is what it says to me, so maybe a bus or short plane hop from a cruise destination is where to look.
Since I do not know where it is, it is not a challenge so the thread can go on.

Different hotel room one hopes, or that really would be a small world.
visibility3miles 1st Oct 2011, 20:56 Probably exactly the same year, month, day....
Sorry, correction, it was probably 1985.

P.P.S., Perhaps I am an ingrate.
Maybe it was in the 1970's. I was in college/grad school in both decades, so in retrospect think it was the 70's. Have no way of knowing what hotel, aside from it not collapsing.
I've never felt an earthquake like that. It would get my attention.
I knew someone at Travis who watched each joint/paving gap in the runway give off a puff of dust as a distant earthquake rippled through. He thought it was interesting.

OK, going by the terrain, gotta be close. How about the Kern River, near Lake Isabella? If not, I have one more choice then I'm out.
Not the Kern... Still too far North and West
My last guess was the Owens River in Eastern California, but I can't recall any parties like that. The American River, yeah, but it doesn't look like that at all, save for the bikinis. I considered Parker Tube Float but you already dismissed the Colorado River so I'm out of guesses.
