One is suitably impressed Sabredog.

It is indeed the Tower of Silence on Shamsan overlooking Crater. I used to get the heebie jeebies just looking up and seeing the kites that had engorged themselves on dead people lying there.

Was back there about a year ago.....................

A bit more:

The Tower of Silence, also known as dakhma, dokhma or doongerwadi, is a circular raised structure used by Parsees (Zoroastrians) for exposure of the dead. Zoroastrians consider a dead body to be 'nasu', unclean and according to tradition, the purpose of exposure is to preclude the pollution of earth or fire. The corpse is placed atop a tower and so exposed to the sun and to birds of prey. In Aden these birds would have been the kite hawks and crows. Bodies are arranged in three rings: men around the outside, women in the second circle, and children in the innermost ring. The ritual precinct may only be entered by a special class of pallbearers. Once the bones have been bleached by the sun and wind, which can take as long as a year, they are collected in an ossuary pit at the center of the tower.

The Tower of Silence in Crater was built by local businessman and philanthropist, Cowasjee Dinshaw Adenwalla, himself a Parsee. The tower is located 200 metres south of the Tawila Tanks, on a small plateau of the Shamsan Range, overlooking the Fire Temple and town of Crater.

Tower of Silence in Crater, Aden c. 1935

With the advent of communism after 1967, the Agiary, Dakhma and their funds, etc. all became state property. With all the Parsees set to leave Aden, who would take care of the Atash (the eternal fire)? That's when Cowasjee Dinshaw, the great grandson of Cowasjee Dinshaw Adenwalla who had built the Agiary and Dakhma in Aden in the last century, decided that he would not let the Holy Atash, which had sustained and nurtured the community in this land away from home, just die away. Most of the Parsees in Aden had prospered and done very well for themselves, and they strongly believed it was due to the blessings of the Atash which had provided them with spiritual sustenance and was an important focal point of keeping the Parsee community united, alive and energetic.

After much wrangling with the authorities over a prolonged period the Holy Flame was eventually flown out of Aden on 14th November, 1976 bound for Lonvala, India on a chartered Air India Boeing 707 with an all-Parsee crew. As the aircraft took off, the Yemeni officials gave it a 21-gun salute, the sounds of which were heard all over Aden. This signified the end of the Parsee era in Aden.

Today the disused Tower of Silence is all but forgotten by most locals. The path leading up to it was once carefully marked but today it is littered with old car bodies and other junk. The walls are breached in many places and lend themselves merely as supports for graffiti.

Porta all'Arco Etrsucan Gate, Italy

Porta all'Arco, the dark stone archway in Twilight Saga New Moon, is from the Etruscan period. It's believed that it was originally constructed in the 5th century BC and had three imposing heads of gods. You can see remains of the heads and the large stone blocks used by the Etruscans. The brick was added later to reinforce the gate. This photo was taken from outside Volterra looking in to the town. :p

The second pic is of the abandoned village of Ghul at the mouth of the Wadi.

Correct!

The arch is quite possibly the oldest functioning arch in the World. A fried has his house just out of site to the right looking at that pic. House abutts the wall. When renovating, said mate, discovered what appeared to be a urinal leading into the wall.

One took a pee there in what has to be the oldest urinal in the World. Certainly over 2000 yrs old.

Something drying? Tobacco?

River, not coastal?

The style of the poles with wires? strung slackly between them is niggling my brain. It would, however, have to be rather more than just a niggle to elicit any sensible response.

Picture instantly prompts and Asian feel, but as that has been counted out, along with North America, I will count out Europe and the Middle East because I can..

That leaves, what, Australasia, South America and Africa.

Not Australasia.

Got a feeling for a great African lake but the boat steers me away from that (as does the rest of the pic :}.

South America is a mystery to me, so no clue there.

The state-of-the-art Airbus plant in Méaulte comes as something of a surprise looming up out of the battlefields of the Somme.

Méaulte goes a long way back, for this is where locally born pioneer Henri POTEZ installed his workshop in 1924. Up to 5,000 people later worked in the hangars of “Aéroplanes Henri POTEZ”, rolling out 300 units of the legendary P25 TOE, emblematic of French aviation during the colonial period.

Today it specialises in high speed machining of small and medium-sized light alloy mechanical parts together with assembly of “nosecones” and fuse sections for the whole of the Airbus range.

The adjoining airport is Albert-Bray. (http://www.maplandia.com/belgium/airports/albert-bray-airport/)

It was obviously a larger component that I was following when I snapped the pic posted. I though the "Convoi Exceptionnel" on the back of the truck approaching a factory may have been helpful clues.

Downey was the old Rockwell site though. Five miles from where I am sitting at this very moment.

Yes, sabredog. I thought you would have had the answer sooner.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_Bay_Bridge)

IIRC, during the design stage of the older span, it was cut back from 3 to 2 lanes to Save Money. In retrospect, this was a very bad decision.

Now I'm calibrated.
Rotterdam is "just outside" Brussels.

Rule3
26th May 2011, 00:48
In Australia, Katherine is considered to be just down "The Track" from Darwin, a distance of 200 miles or 320 km. Alice Springs is a little further down "The Track" a mere 1060 miles or 1700 km. A days drive by ours standards. Therefore, Rotterdam to Brussells is a " Drop Kick" or a "Stones Throw away."

seacue
26th May 2011, 01:25
I suppose that "near" strongly depends on whether there is anything along the intervening path. Some of the examples you quoted show the emptiness of parts of Oz Some of the "flyover" states in the US come close.

jet_noseover
26th May 2011, 01:41
OK, I hope we cleared the issue of distances for now. I'll try to be more exact next time. For me, it was a 40 min ride from Key West to Dry Tortugas so it was "just". Also it is the first island south-west off of Key West, therefore "just". Hope that is acceptable, seacue. :O

In the mean time, I "assume" I got the bridge from the latest challenge so I will post another pix to keep things moving along. If I may:

From the outside, the offices of San Francisco game company Three Rings Design look like any small game studio, but the building's bowels are leagues from ordinary. The company's loft, in the trendy South of Market district, has been painstakingly outfitted to resemble The Nautilus from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The offices have an attacking octopus couch, a secret lounge hidden behind a bookcase, captain's quarters and a steampunk bike rack, plus a ton of other Victorian details.

I have been a frequent guest there (the hotel) and the location is just spectacular!

This one I took at night, overlooking Boeing headquarters and Sears (Willis Tower these days)
