What is a right to discharge under medical grounds?

Can someone answer the following question pse?

If and when you get boarded at Henlow for your perm med cat and they do not decide to dispense with your services. I believe that you can still apply to leave under med grounds? does anyone know if this is true and also how does the package work?

Just had a med board and as I understand it if you are losing your flying cat then as aircrew you are entitled to an A5 cat which guarantees you can leave the service.

Quite what happens with regards to pension etc is unclear but the A5 cat is your guaranteed ticket out of here.

I had a Med Board at Henlow in 2009 - I was given a reduced med cat but allowed to stay on (mostly flying a desk at the time). I was sent a letter advising me of my options - there were 3 of them:

1. Accept offer of retention in current specialisation until next exit point.

2. Refuse the retention offer and elect to leave ASAP iaw QR2906(3)

3. Exercise my right as aircrew to be invalided under QR1421(3)/526A(4)
The medical staff kept me informed at all stages and were very helpful - there may well be a suitable cell to discuss the options at your station medical centre - go and ask them.... they are usually very open and helpful.

Bottom Line - you can elect to speak to an aircrew specialist about your options after your med Board but before you have to make a decision. Note that a reduced med cat may affect your ability to deploy and therefore may affect your future employability at a career departure point - it can also affect your promotion prospects for the same reason.

PS. I was able to regain some of my lost med cat about a year later which took me back above "minima" following medical treatment (upgrade recommended by my medical specialist and carried out at my SMC - it did not need another formal med board). Don't give up hope!

I will be going for a med board soon. I want to stay in and I want my full med cat back. Most of the docs etc in the chain are very supportive, one seems to be less so. Does anyone have any advice about dealing with these guys and about the appeals process should things not go my way?
