If I look up from where I am sitting I can see a picture of myself standing in front of XS710 at Stradishall, together with 9 other guys on my nav course.

Cant believe that pic was taken 40 years ago. Wish I still looked as good as the Dominie!

Could be a five ship - Hopefully the one of the Doms that needs some dents knocked out will be ready... something to do with the number of gulls it hit on Friday I think:eek:

Pity they couldn't have included Stradishall in the flypast. I'm selfish as it's just up the road from me. Saw many photo's of the place when at Jock Whitehouses place in Hundon, the guy who alongside Spencer Adams put Strads history into print.

Despite Dominie XS737 having a multiple bird strike on Friday the ac is serviceable and available for the 6 ac photo shoot on 18 Jan 11. A testament to this venerable aircraft. Despite it being expensive to operate it's robust construction is still more appropriate to military aviation than some of it's modern replacements.

What a horrible little aeroplane . . .

Still, it gave sterling service to the RAF for so many years.

Never good to hear of a fleet retiring with no sign of a replacement:

Vulcan
PR9
Nimrod
Harrier

All had specific capabilities, whether strategic bombing, high level flexible photo reconnaissance (and no, drones have not taken over completely because they cannot go everywhere the PR9 could), maritime patrol or VTOL.

And now it's the end of the Dominie.

Back at the time of the 1977 Silver Jubilunacy flypast at Finningley, 12 raspberry ripple Learning Command aeroplanes were about to launch for a practice from Leeming.

"Why have some of those Dominies got grey noses?", enquired some visiting VSO who'd been let out of the MoD Box and had wandered oop north to watch the events.

"Because, sir, some of those Dominies are Jetstreams. If you look carefully, you'll see they've also got propellers!" announced some Spec Aircrew mate who wasn't totally impressed with the niff-naff and triv associated with the whole thing....:\

Can't say I enjoyed every one of my sorties in the Dominie but it definitely gave good service to Her Majesty.

Ah well, another of the types I've flown destined to be a Gate Guardian.

I suspect that there are more Navs declaring fond memories for the Dom than pilots:)
I am one such, having been exposed to it's delights on three separate occasions; on 125 course at 1 ANS Stradishall 69-70, 155 Staff N course Craners 76 and 394 Nav refresher at Finningley in 84.
I must say the change from chugging around the skies in the Varsity doing Basic Nav on 2 ANS at Gaydon to jetting about the stratosphere in the Dom was a bit of a culture shock. Trying to get two pre-comp'd 3 star astro fixes in during a sortie was a bit of a challenge ( they had to be pre-comp'd at flt planning as doing the bl**dy sums used to take longer than the sortie lasted as I recall).Any way, fond memories; sad to see them go.
Tankertrashav: snap on your pickie in front of XS710. got one just like it in front of me right now. Perchance you on 125 at strad? PM me if so.

Beags,

It's obvious, mate. The politicos have decided we are going to withdraw from our role as World (or even just Commonwealth) policeman. Therefore, we don't need fancy jets. Lots of boots on parade, yes - it brings in £Zillions from the tourists in London. As for the future of the RAF, forget it. Turning into a (mini-)clone of the the RNethAF. At least they don't grumble about separation and turbulence - 20 years on the same Sqn, on the same base!

When will some politico have the guts to announce the new strategy? Oh, sorry, I forgot: we've just had the all-purpose SDSR.

My late father flew Dominies at the RAF College of Air Warfare, the aircraft being based at Strubby. He first flew them in March 1966 and RAFCAW had XS 710,732,733,734,735 and 736 on strength initially. Sad to see it go but what an incredible service to the RAF these machines have given.

Sad to see the Dominie has now gone. I will miss watching them circuit bashing at Waddington when I'm up that part of the country.

Although they only bought 20 aircraft, it must be one of only a few training aircraft to have served for such a long period without ever suffering a single loss during its career.

Hopefully, the survivors will find new homes and not end up in the smelter.

"The Hawker Siddeley Dominie. Surely it was bought as the DH125?"

Hawker Siddeley acquired De Havilland Aircraft in 1960, the year before the 125 project was started. However the old legacy name and the 'DH' designation was used during the development phase of the project. After the aircraft went into full production (the first customer airframe was delivered in September 1964, the first Dominie XS709 'M' being delivered on 30 Dec 1964), the name was changed to 'HS 125'.

Sad to see them go, I really enjoyed my 1000+ hours on type.

Goodbye old girl.

Fond (I think) memories of convincing myself the orange radar soup was some town or target. After 20 years I´ll finally admit I usually didnt have a clue what the radar picture was saying, usually hoping beyond hope that the TANS hadn´t gone off on one and sneaking a look at the same time for the Trent power stations through the tiny curtain gap.

Also, chilling as Nav 2 and doing the "accidental kick" under the table when you realised your mate on Nav 1 might miss an important altitude call or something. Normally followed by a whack around the head by the instructor. And by god, my ex Phantom mate instructor had a good right hook........

And I can still remember the smell of the Finningley aircrew feeder at some godforesaken early hour.

Fond memories of a faithful steed.

I was only ever a student on the Dominie, but my most vivid memory was the Pole Hill recovery from high level into Finningley.

You had to make sure you packed all your nav kit away, or secured it, before you started the descent, or you would end up wearing it... Good times, so long ago!

Stradishall Adv Nav Trng Cse Sep-Nov '68. I remember the nigh impossible "activity" requirement for Strad-Duxford-Wyton- 53N 01E. Compass comparison, fix, alteration of heading, revised eta. The Decca fix with oggliometers whizzin' around like good 'uns due close spacing of the red, yellow, green(?). The 3 sectors couldn't have been more than a few minutes each as I recall. Hardly time to sharpen your 4H.!!
On one Airways Navex, took a shuftee at the "cloud and clonk" (CCWR) and thought I'd avert a near catastrophy by giving an immediate 60 degree alteration of course to avoid a monstrous Cu Nim. The clonk in fact was across my shoulders as the instructor used my straight-edge to emphasise that I was looking at Istres harbour as the dish was on full downwards tilt.
Quelle Plonqueur!! :O

Decimal 7 Mach converting to 280 KIAS, IIRC, Idle/Idle Airbrakes out - you could get somewhere between 12000-15000 fpm RoD. Cracking fun at night - and certainly made the Stude(s) sit up and take notice!

Oh yes the Pole Hill recovery with the pressurisation on the dump valve could make or break an Eng stude! We did ours into Waddo as Applied Flt had bolt holed there in early 89 whilst Finningley’s runway was resurfaced.

I used to love the final approach past Lincoln Cathedral at night because by that stage the beasting from your instructor was over. Little did I know that eventually I would be a Flt Eng on E3D’s, the sight always filled me with a warm feeling even on four hour P sorties!!

Ahh nostalgia!!

The Dominie flypast went to plan and looked very professional. Once again, however, the crew that actually led the formation recieved no recognition by the RAF or the media. Andy Neal and Jim Crowley were the lead pilot and nav who got the formation to the right place at the right time. As you say the rest of D Flt did an outstanding job in being so smooth. Who would believe you could do such a thing with a 45 year old business jet.

I was at Stradishall when the first Domine came in. Soon after, one did a wheels up at Manston which is a long pub type story. I was part of the initial rescue crew but which A/C was it ?

Preparing the Met. for the 6-ship landaways from Finningley to Gib. was very nerve racking .......... not many allowable divs. what the tension with Spain, and the obs. from the possible divs were, shall we say, not to British standards ..... as for their TAFS!
Not much info from the Atlantic in those days ...... satellite was only interpreted for us by HQ and the resultantant cartoon issued.

I didn't relish the go/nogo discussions with OCOps [or was it still OCFlying in those days?]

Even if nothing else, it was an expensive failure if the trip was scrubbed enroute.

I don't think I caused any of those, but it was a close-run thing.

Ahhh ... I probably told him what to do a few times, then!
Strubby ATC, 65-67.

I do remember the Strubby Nav staff saying the "VC-5" didn't have enough legs to get the Staff N/Spec N students properly lost, but it was undoubtedly more comfortable than the Canberra B2s they replaced.

God, I'm getting old ... we used to get a sgt pilot fly up from Chivenor every weekend in a Meteor to see his lady-friend. Amazingly, I can still remember his name and his c/s [63]. Now where did I put the car keys?

TEEEJ,

Doesn't look as if they're flying off the shelves, how much are they up for? Not sure what the small jet trainers are next to the 146s (if thats what they are).

55(R) Sqn old Dominies in retirement, Kemble July 2012 - Echelon Wealthcare (http://www.echelonwealthcare.co.uk/55r-sqn-dominies-kemble-july-2012/)

Last time I was at Kemble, the place was full of BAOR/RAFG drawdown gear and some old A10s. Now, lots of grotty airliners. Great playground though, and my last Harrier Force exercise was there. Was it really 20 years ago? The war stopped for the FA Cup final..

Al
the Doms were sold by DSA last year to the guy at Kemble for about £150000 (6 complete jets and 5 spare Vipers) He hasnt been able to move them on by the look of things, although some were for sale on controller.com recently.

The last Dom is still hangared at Cranwell; it is planned for gateguard duty ouside SHQ.

Blimey - cheap (to my mind anyway!).

Cheers.

PS: I take it, they're still airworthy, to be flown out of there. How long can they be hanging around before they lose their airworthiness certificates?

Al

Almost certainly maintained over their long life to military standards not civil. If that's the case then they won't have recognised airworthiness certificates, rendering them, well, fit for scrap.

Cheers.. no protocol agreeing some minimum common servicing standard then. I understand the issue of Lightnings and Vulcans etc, but something like this that has a regular civvy post service use? If it is just scrap.. it is expensive scrap.

Why expensive?

Basic airframe circa 1966. Re-engined at all? Any money spent on them by MOD was many years ago. Internal layout not exactly VIP configuration.

I was referring to the second hand buy price.. 150k for 6 (cheap if they were going to fly, expensive if not)? I don't know, that might be cheap if they got recycled and stripped and if the market justifies it.
