Hi All,

As we're all awared of the situation up in QLD, I guess I dont need to explain why im doing this.

Anyway, a friend of mine got a few relatives up in a small township called "Miles" in QLD, Northwest of Toowoomba. We're trying to organising a group of us to head up there to assist the local with the rebuild. I was just wondering if any of you guys are familiar enough to know where the nearest airport / airstrip is located around Miles (I've checked Chinchilla and Roma, but not sure if they're bit too far from Miles)?? Possibly has enough length to land a PA-31 with full load. Thanks guys.

cheers~:ok:

Pretty sure Miles has one and sealed. Few miles out of miles too!

Google earth and poke around or check the aopa directory

There is a strip just south of Miles (on the edge of town) on the Condamine Rd. I know nothing about it - but a C172 was parked there last time I was in that part of the world. Took a C150 into there 34 yrs ago!

There is the Miles (YMLS) aerodrome about half way between Miles and Condamine (26:48.36 S, 150:10.18E), Elev 996', 04/22 1300M gravel, PAL 120.35 - about 25 km south of Miles.

There is no fuel at YMLS, but there is at Chinchilla. The Chinchilla strip is close to town and rental cars are available there. Chinchilla is an easy commute to Miles. Roma is a bit far.

If you are looking for a motel bed - book ahead, as the coal-seam gas project people have most of Chinchilla and Miles booked out through the week.

PS: Well that was the case pre-floods . Maybe the flood have wiped out the coal-seam gas project ? Would be one good thing to come out of the big mess!

Hi PA911,

FTDK is pretty much spot on. I flew into Miles a few nights ago. Strip is gravel and in good condition. The windsock is on the SW end. Elevation is 996 feet. RWY 04/22 is 1100m long and 30m wide. PAL is 120.35. :ok:

Roma is 140 kms west of Miles. Chinchilla is around 70 kms east of Miles. The Warrego Highway is open from Roma to Miles but closed between Miles and Chinchilla.

Roma and Miles were not flooded although the creek rose a little at Miles. The flooding starts further east at Chinchilla and south at Condamine. Miles had some flooding earlier in the December floods.

I don't know the Miles airstrip but believe it will take an RFDS King Air, so a PA31 should fit. I think the AAE - GAM Shrike freighter goes in there each day.

And the "terminal" has had a face lift (sort of)

It might be fenced - but the roos are still there

I can confirm it is absolutely suitable for a PA31. Can you make sure you park tight into one corner of the apron as a fair bit of traffic including Kingairs in and out of there at the moment. No taxis so pre organise a lift into town.

I was sussing it out on google map, saw the strip just off Condamine Rd, is that YMLS or there is another strip around town?

Thanks for the support guys, our planning is still at its beginning stage :E

YMLS is about half way between Miles and Condamine, but there is a strip just on the southern edge of Miles. Like I said, I landed a C150 on the strip about 30 yrs ago but can't tell you anything about it. Had the Bo on YMLS a couple of times last year.

Got it!! Managed to find it on google map......hmmm seems like there are two south of the township, one's on the corner of Old Cameby Road and Leichhardt Highway (looks like a cross RWY there), the other one is a shorter one just off McNulty St, closer to the town.

Cheers~

OK, its the one adjacent to the Leichardt Hwy that I landed on many years ago. Used to be called Ford's (???) strip, I think. Wasn't aware of the other one - looks kinda short for a PA31.

Ford was the local dentist
Had a couple of pet donkeys by memory
There was a cross strip but hardly used
Power lines at the highway end
Don't think its in use any more but maybe the odd C172 goes there

The strip on the edge of town is owned by the local mechanic. I've been in there in a Archer and a Sneaker, its as long and wide as the 'town' strip which is the one 20 odd k south towards Condamine. Does have some anthills at some times of the year. Can't remember the guys name, but he's the only workshop in town....not hard to find.

The new airport should be open by now
Anyone been there, are you still welcome to land or has it become restrictive like Moranbah

Overflew new runway last week, I think it is still shut, Chinchilla very busy as a result.

Infrastructure complete, just awaiting the CASA approval process to complete;)

No parking available according to council!!!! Land, disembark pax, leave... No discussion entered into.

Should make it interesting when it finally opens.:uhoh:

Miles opened Thursday. The strip is strictly only available for operations with prior approval. No parking available for more then 30 minutes due to the high volume of authorised charters and Dash 8 traffic. There is a notam referring to all of this. https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/naips/ChartDirectory/Details/B0E1NUX3

The location and elevation of the obstacles in that notam are not in the most useful unit system. Looks like they got pulled straight off the Origin GIS drawings and were not translated into aviation.
