Not a lot in terms of annual running costs....but not have to spend about £600M over the next 5 years or so if they had to buy new aircraft to replace the SAR SKs with the RAF & RN for SAR by 2017. It was deemed unaffordable about 8 years ago...hence the last 4 years have been spent in competition to choose the PFI provider...Soteria is the preferred bidder and those of us who are interested are awaiting Ministerial confirmation that the deal will go ahead after the new Governemnt postponed a decision in June for 6 months. (A statement to that effect was to be given on Dec 14th last was postponed at Soteria's behest but no one except those very close to the decision making knows why).
