The 2011 Defense Authorization Act has changed the status of Warrant Officer 1s in the US Army. They will be Commissioned by the President of the United States (currently they are appointed by Warrant by the Secretary of the Army).

This means that all grades of Warrant Officers (WO1 - CW5) in the US Army will be Commissioned from 2011.

This authority will apply only to the Army - US Marine WO1s will continue to be appointed by Warrant.

Sorry but am I missing something? As I think Kreuger flap was saying rather more diplomatically, will there be no more WO1s in the US Mil? So if all WO1s evaporate, there will only be WO2s? I suppose you could always rate them WO.

Assuming this will migrate to all Arms, when are you chaps reintroducing Prize Money?

GBZ and Kreuger, I think you have both misinterpreted the OP. In the US forces the upper level of WOs hold a Commission. The OP is merely stating that all US Army WOs will now be commissioned - they remain WO's and don't adopt officer rank.

Being an old fashioned Warrant Officer....only the US Army could find a way to create a Commissioned Warrant Officer! I am glad to see some tradition left in my Army....even if only it is stupidity at the top end of the chain of command!

A wee spot of trivia....it takes a higher GT score (Army Aptitude Test) to be a Warrant Officer than to be a Real Life Officer (LT....and up). Only the American Army could come up with a system that structurally creates a system where by the "Brighter" are commanded by the "less Bright".:ugh:

I don't think this is a new idea. The Royal Navy used to have a commissioned Warrant Officer scheme in the 1930's

You are either commissioned OR hold a Warrant. I don't see how both can be combined?

They will be commissioned (not warranted), but the name and place in the system of the rank will remain "Warrant Officer".

This only applies to the US Army... the USMC will still do things the sensible way.

Not Long Here - all US Warrant Officers are Officers but, from 2011, they will be commissioned at Warrant Officer 1. They will not be appointed by a Warrant.

This will be useful information for those British Warrant Officers on an exchange program with US Forces.

The US decided that its Warrant Officers should be commissioned - as Warrant Officers. This has been shagged to death ad nauseum ad infinitum on these very pages, but for accuracy the definition is below. For those who have a life, the summary is they are trade specialists, not generalists, hold a commission - but they are still, and will remain, Warrant Officers on their very own career track.

"Warrant officers are highly specialized, single-track specialty officers who receive their authority from the Secretary of the Army upon their initial appointment. However, Title 10 USC authorizes the commissioning of warrant officers (WO1) upon promotion to chief warrant officer (CW2). These commissioned warrant officers are direct representatives of the president of the United States. They derive their authority from the same source as commissioned officers but remain specialists, in contrast to commissioned officers, who are generalists. Warrant officers can and do command detachments, units, activities, and vessels as well as lead, coach, train, and counsel subordinates. As leaders and technical experts, they provide valuable skills, guidance, and expertise to commanders and organizations in their particular field."

WO1's (RSM's) in da army would normally be given a new job as a QM. Knew two, one of whom was made Captain - hated it he did and resigned 8 months later. T'other one became a Major.

At least, that's how it used to be!
