The relevant legislation says that if a command instrument rating has expired more than 12 months beyond the original expiry date, the test must be treated as an initial issue. Does this mean you have to be recommended by a CFI before fronting for the test and does this mean you must undertake a CFI assessment flight before he recommends you for the test.

From the point of view of the flight test, what is the difference in the mandated airborne test sequences, between an Initial Issue command instrument rating and a Renewal. Is the duration of the test roughly the same for both? Is the cross-country part of the test the same distance for each?
