DefenseNews: China Steps Up Anti-Carrier Missile Tests (http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=5327852&c=ASI&s=AIR)

TOKYO - China is stepping up efforts to deploy a "carrier-killer" missile system, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Command has said in an interview with a Japanese newspaper, published Dec. 28.

"The anti-ship ballistic missile system in China has undergone extensive testing," Adm. Robert Willard told the Asahi Shimbun in Honolulu, according to a transcript of the interview on its website.

Willard said China appeared to have achieved "initial operational capability" but it would take "several more years" before fully deploying the system.

U.S. military analysts have warned (http://politicsandcriticalthinking.********.com/2009/03/dong-feng-21-chinese-carrier-killing.html) China is developing a new version of its Dongfeng 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DF-21)1 missile that could pierce the defenses of even the most sturdy U.S. naval vessels and has a range far beyond Chinese waters.

Suddenly realised what the logic was then, to scrap our RN carriers. We're always one step ahead... :ok:

China's new weapon still can't compare with our government in terms of killing carriers.

Seeing as it has mammoth range, I wonder what they are going to use to provide targeting information? Satellite's?

Seeing as it has mammoth range, I wonder what they are going to use to provide targeting information? Satellite's? errr, that's covered in the Dongfeng 21 link above. :8

......Such a missile may have been tested in 2005-6, and the launch of the Jianbing-5/YaoGan-1 and Jianbing-6/YaoGan-2 satellites (http://www.sinodefence.com/space/military/yaogan.asp) would give the Chinese targeting information from SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and visual imaging respectively.....

'U.S. military analysts have warned China is developing a new version of its Dongfeng 21 missile that could pierce the defenses of even the most sturdy U.S. naval vessels and has a range far beyond Chinese waters.'

Well, so much for the years of touting Aegis (Ticonderoga CGs and Arleigh Burke DDGs) with SM3 as an effective ABM capability! Perhaps some scare-mongering to protect single-service defense (sic) budgets?

Ha! Once we get the Friggen Sharks with Laser beams on their heads, then we'll see who's boss in the Pacific!

Aegis/SM2 and SM3 has only ever had/claimed a capability against SRBM/IRBM (http://www.acus.org/files/ISP/Atlantic%20Council.Final.O'Reilly.presentation.pdf), never ICBM. The speeds are far greater, and MIRV warheads with decoys were also never part of the equation.

Self-defence against the ICBM threat is the intended role of the DDG-1000 (http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=4406850) and later classes using directed energy weapons. They've already demonstrated the capability against small boat type targets (http://optics.org/news/1/4/28) and aircraft. (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=laser-downs-uavs) Unfortunately systems effective against the ICBM/MIRV threat are at least 10 years away from deployment, though they're working at it (http://www.navsea.navy.mil/nswc/dahlgren/NEWS/directed_energy/directed_energy.aspx).

Which leaves rather a wide window of vulnerability.

I can't get samples out of Dongguan so I wouldn't worry too much about a ballistic missile reaching it's target.

But at least the Chinese aren't working on an independent series of guidance satellites (Beidou), such that they could attack GPS through novel weapons..............oh no wait....

Here's a good defence.

Stay in your own back yard and stop bothering people.

tonker, totally agree.

Leave getting involved with matters that don't concern us to the americans, they're quite good at getting their arses kicked without our help.
