Historic flight re-enactment ends up in the poo

A veteran pilot from Victoria had a close shave at the weekend, while re-enacting a historic flight.
Ben Buckley, of Gippsland, was the pilot of a plane re-enacting the first powered, controlled flight, in an Australian-designed and built plane by John Duigan in 1910.
The event was held in the central Victorian town of Ballarat.
The plane had a number of power and control problems, but did manage to get off the ground.
However, Mr Buckley says when it came down, it veered off the runway and crashed into a 20 tonne pile of chicken manure.
"The council had shifted it to the edge of the runway and the aeroplane finished up in that," he said.
"Well there was a bit of give in it. I'm still a bit stiff and sore though, I can tell you."
Mr Buckley says the team members were disappointed but they are determined to try again.
"Duigan even crashed his first one. I've seen a picture of an effort he did there," he said.
"There's conflicting stories and there'll be conflicting stories about this."

Mate, you should have joined the airlines, they specialise in it. You only ended up in it once, if you had been flying with us, you could have enjoyed it every day. (I hope you nicked some for your garden)!:D

So was this contrap... er, aircraft, REGISTERED in any way shape or form, or does the group of owners/builders and the pilot not bother about such trivial legal things?:D

Looks like the fun police have arrived.

Ben was probably the only one crazy enough to take to the skies in such a contraption.

A lot can be learnt from Ben (both good and bad :\ )

Ohhh Dear - I hope that's not an omen for QANTAS after the recent problems with VH-OQA – `Nancy-Bird Walton' .........

VH-OQK – `John and Reginald Duigan' – First Australians to design, construct and fly a powered aircraft, in 1910;

Ahh Benny,

Often in the sh!t, only the depth that varied. For those who have not heard of Ben Buckley, he was a bit of a bad boy as far as the DCA, DOT (ATG), DOA, CAA and CASA was concerned. He has a long and chequered history of treading on the department's toes.

He once showed me a copy of a letter that he had sent to his arch nemesis at NAAFI along the lines of:

"Please confirm that this is the 13th time my pilot licence has been suspended as I believe this to be a new world record and require written proof for the Guinness book of Records"

He is a true Aussie anti-establishment larrikin, even though he is actually a KIWI

Benny is also the guy that flew an ultra light direct across the tasman in an unauthorized adventure to NZ a few years ago, powered by a two stroke and with a couple of 20 litre chemical drums full of premix and a hand pump. he did say that he picked a nice day for it, he's not silly.

How many airfields just happen to have a 20 tonne pile of chickenschizer right beside their runways? Not many I'd say. The whole story sounds like a great load of chickenschizer.

If you want a good chuckle there is a book written by Bob Stevens that details Bens career. Called ‘Buckley’s Chance’ ISBN 0 957737203. Good read.
