EK A380 Damaged in Toronto

Happened Monday night.

No idea as to extent of damage but unconfirmed chat from another site:


Happened earlier this evening in Toronto. The caterer had just finished servicing the upper deck galley, and was in the process of lowering the truck. There was an equipment failure of some type (I was told, anyway) and the truck wound up resting on the upper part of the wing. The driver scrambled out onto the wing to escape the truck. There is a fair bit of damage, and they might require a crane to remove the truck from the wing.

From what i heard it looks like the a380 will be down for a while. So far they see 3 damaged ribs in the wing. they had to remove the catering truck with 2 cranes. if i get some pics i'll post.

Schedules being shuffled as we speak to replace the lost a/c. Hopefully not out of service too long.

Not as much damage as the Qantas 380..there is discussion in engineering circles that the damage to the main spar may be such that the aircraft may be a write off.

Potential for an incident seemed very high with ramp conditions at the time.

Looking at the pictures;
It appears that the top floor is catered using an overwing door.
The catering truck has to carefully position itself over the top of the leading edge to access this door.
Is this a normal procedure?
If so, then surely an incident like this was inevitable?

Could very well be. From this side pic, it appears the door is directly over the leading edge fillet. Not sure exactly how they manoeuvre the catering truck into postion for the upper deck.

Assuming it is to scale, the U2R/U2L is definately over the wing leading edge.

Based upon the geometry and the recent incident I suspect there will be changes to catering procedures forthcoming?

Looking at the 2 photos visible, it appears that the damage may well be restricted to the leading edge falsework, and not involve the wing box, as the falsework on the A380 is HUGE.
Still an extensive repair needed though, so if anyone sees a tent appearing over that wing, you will know a patch is being nailed on as a temp repair and then be ferried to a suitably sized hangar. Any bets on a return to Toulouse?:hmm:
