Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Four years ago I had the privilege and honour of being selected as the Visiting Officer for Flight Sergeant Ady Davies family. He was the Flight Engineer on board XV230 when it tragically crashed on 2 September 2006.
Since then me and my family have become very close family friends of the Davies and I think we are likely to remain lifelong friends!
I have seen just a small part of the difficult times that this family and all of the others have gone through since the crash and I know that most will never really overcome what happened that day.
Throughout the 4 years or so a number of people and organisations have helped these families through the most difficult of situations. Many of these organisations will remain anonymous, providing their support in the background and pretty transparent to you and I; however, I wanted to do something for one of these organisations in return for the support that I think they have given to many of, if not all of the families involved in this particular incident.
SSAFA is a wonderful organisation that prides itself on being there for life even if you have only served one day! I have had the privilege of serving for nearly 30 years and I hope that my family never need their support. But it is comforting knowing that they are there if needed.
In return for the support that SSAFA has given not only to those involved in the XV230 incident, but for all of those Service families affected by tragedy and misfortune, I wanted to give something back!
For those of you that do not know me that well, I am an RAF Orienteer; it is something that I adore with a passion and I cannot help but try to push myself to the limit. So when I thought what I could do to try to raise both money and awareness for SSAFA, I thought what better than to go for the ultimate challenge of a marathon… and why not the most well known… the London Marathon.
I hope you feel that my cause is worthy and that you feel you could support me in whatever small measure you feel appropriate… if this email is passed on to your family and friends and each one gave only the smallest contribution, it could amount to an incredible sum for an amazing organisation. So please, pass this email on to anyone that may be either involved with the British Services or to your families who may also like to contribute. This is one of the few organisations that actually give everything back to ex-Servicemen, no matter what, where or when they served.
Thank you for reading this far… people are always asking for money from you and in these difficult times money is very tight. It may be the demise of Nimrod, but for those of us who had the pleasure of flying her for many years, let’s look back with fond memories… some good… some sad… but without a doubt, memorable!
