Does anyone have info on the tail-pipe fairing fitted to some Hunters? Reason? When? What Marks etc? Thanks.

I don't know what Mk. etc, but I think you will find it's the brake chute stowage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I thought the bullet in line with the tail-plane was the Brake Chute. I'm after the rather smart fairing on top of the tail-pipe.

Hi Forget

The fancy fairing in question is on all Hunter Marks with brake chutes, the fairing shape is to allow space for the packed parachute which is fitted in a recess under 2 panels which require a great deal of brute force to close.
Mk4 no chute
Mk6 no chute

Mk6A,7,8,9,10,11,12 chute.
:ok:
Cheers

Thanks Rigger, and my apologies to dixi who was right first time. :\

I'd been told the bullet was the brake chute housing which, when you think about it, doesn't make sense. Clearly I didn't think about it; and I thought all Hunters had brake chutes. (Excuse? ex Vulcan man. :hmm:)

The bullet fairing at the rear of the junction between the vertical and horizontal tails came to be after heavy buffet and rudder vibration was experienced during early dive tests at IMN 0.97-0.98.

The bullet fairing that was fitted cured the buffet and allowed dives to IMN 1.06.

Wish I had seen this thread earlier.

LM also flown five marks of Hunter.

And very dainty 'chutes they were too when compared to the great smelly things Phantoms dangled out of their backsides!

Speaking of Hunters - here's one I did earlier. I need to figure out how to retain the blue sky when it's hanging on an office wall. :hmm:

Thank you both. It’s something I’ve wanted to experiment with for sometime. I eventually found a mold company in the midlands with the nous to handle the detail (down to access panel screw heads) and the contacts to 'Mil Spec' electro-plate resin – which borders on alchemy.

It’s a pity that the pix above aren’t quite the effect you’ll get in your office/study (blue sky) but, if you hang it right, it’s still the dogs - as they say.

This one is experimental again. It has a smaller scale Hunter above and behind. As yet un-plated but a slight colour variation on the larger one will improve the perspective. A pair of Hunters - isn't that how they operated.

(Anyone for a Lightning, Phantom, Jaguar, ...........................
