Mystery Missile Launch

The BBC report of a significant missile launch off the coast of California is at the link. Only problem is the US is not aware of any DoD launch! Perhaps it's another RN admiral going ballistic. ;)

Two things come to mind, assuming the Pentagon types are not lying through their teeth.

1. If it was a foreign missile off the coast of Los Angeles, that is quite perturbing. If the launch vessel/submarine got close enough to fire such a missile, it would be close enough for a shorter range attack on LA. Not that loss of LA would be that big of a deal :E, but the wider connotations are worrying. The "kink" in the vapour trail is reminiscent of a submarine launched missile to me. NK or China?

2. If NORAD don't have a handle on this, it would be equally surprising. I won't hold my breath for an explanation though!

The helicopter camera crew footage of the event is edited. There is a lot more than the short snippet that was aired. Some later footage of the event on my post at #78.

Some excellent work from the guys over at Above Top Secret.

The following images prove that it was no missile. The helo cameraman admitted that he filmed the trail for 10 minutes. No ballistic missile would be in view for that length of time. As the airliner approaches the coast the contrail dissapates and it carries on its easterly heading.

Some more excellent analysis on the possibility that it was United Parcel Service Flight UPS902. Flight 902 was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11. As the MD-11 is a tri-engined airliner it would certainly account for the lack of distinct separated contrails in the later stages of the video.
