Would a marine weather radar unit, just like you see on the expensive motor yachts, mounted high up pn a pole, work as a cheap local airport weather radar?

Generally those radars are for other vessels and the terrain. They usually allow satellite weather to be plugged in and displayed on the same screen. When you're hundreds of miles out to sea you'll struggle to outrun the weather, so you just take it as you see it. Very much WYSIWYG.

For what they cost you'd be better off with a dedicated PC sitting there hooked up to the BOM radar.
