OK, being an Air Force type can someone explain how the RN's newest "boat" is called HMS DUNCAN. I appreciate it's the Daring class and the others are named Daring, Dauntless, Diamond, Dragon and Defender but DUNCAN? What on earth made them choose that!

Presumably, for a nautical link, named after Admiral Duncan, the infamous exploding gay bar in Soho.

And if it is like previous ships of that name;) It will have the nickname of "The Drunken Duncan"

It's PC.
Dragon was to keep the Welsh happy and Duncan is to keep the Scots quiet.
Could be worse. They could have gone for another traditional Daring class name: Dainty

Note the other Daring class name that is clearly missing too. Couldn't have the new QE and POW escorted by HMS Diana now could we?

A quick history lesson...

Admiral Adam Duncan secured a very convincing victory over the Dutch (who were fighting for the French) in 1797 at the Battle of Camperdown. For this victory he was titled 1st Viscount of Camperdown. There have been 6 previous HMS Duncans prior to the latest Type 45.

There was also a Duncan Class battleship that had a distinguished service during WWI. There were 6 of them:

HMS Abemarle
HMS Cornwallis
HMS Duncan
HMS Exmouth
HMS Montagu
HMS Russell

My great-grandfather was a Ship's Cpl and Ship's Marksman on a Duncan Class pre-dreadnought at Gallipoli (HMS Cornwallis) - he survived the lot and then was torpedoed off Malta.

That's why I have a passing interest in the HMS Duncans.

Should the next one (defence review allowing, of course) not be called HMS Darling?

To which one could only add, "When was it not, with the Royal Navy?"

Duncan (http://webpages.charter.net/mortickles/friends/duncan.htm)

"A plain speaking engine, Duncan keeps busy and means well. Often bouncy and occasionally rude, Duncan is famous for singing, swaying and swiveling around. His driver calls him "Rock and Roll".

Sorry, just couldn't resist!

Well with all respect, 'Duncan' has to be a hell of a lot better name than 'HMS Beaver' !

I had a rather embarassing time taking a nominal girlfriend out around on a trip to her little yacht to see the the reserve ships, to be confronted with ' Beaver ' ! I knew of her of course but hadn't anticipated... - as usual shocking waste of good ships flogged off etc, bit of a quiet moment but said g/f found the funny side, which I only found out later.

I've always thought the sailors from that ship must have been the toughest crew imaginable, strolling into 'Joanna's' with their ship's names names on their caps !

I kept very well clear, just happened to have made the mistake of going for the sea view in a place at Southsea, at a respectful 1/2 mile nearby as a yachtie - didn't keep the place long !

A hut in the middle of West Freugh would have seemed like the Seychelles...

Not so sure that I would have wanted to serve on H.M.S. Gay Cavalier, Gay Archer or the other "GAY" class patrol boats of the fifties. As for Gay Bruiser....!

Just a little aside for you light blue people. It is a tradition of the Senior Service that on certain ceremonial occaisions The Ship's company will be refered to as "Duncans" the CO as Duncan. A couple of years back two boats held ceremonial divisions on consecutive days, to make life easy for the CT Staff and band. Parade number one , HMS Torbay went with out a hitch. The Parade being called smartly attention at the cry of "Torbay Approaching." The following parade briefly disolved into farce as the CO of HMS Talent arrived on the Saluting Base.:O

Maybe its named after Peter Duncan, the former Blue Peter presenter, who did a series called Duncan Dares?

As I recall HMS Beaver's lynx was called "Fanny" and I think they painted it on the nose at one stage. Good for a visit to the states!

I'm not so sure about that. There's a good photo of a flotilla (or whatever the collective noun is) of 'Gay' boats here: BMPT Forum: Early Day’s of HMS Gay Archer (http://www.bmpt.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=189) and it looked to have been epic fun belting about in those little war canoes back then!

A previous Daring class ship was known as HMS DECOY.

And what about the USN Amphip USS PONCE? I imagine many a fight when she tied up at ports around the world.

Imagine a dunken yank sailor getting into a Guz taxi and saying "Take me to the Ponce."

Millbay Road anyone?

When the RN got rid of the MTBs several of the officers switched to the RAF Marine Branch. One, ex Brave Borderer, IIRC, had a wonderful name which was probably why he was in MTBs in the first place - Moriarty!

Given that they were used as fast training boats into the 70s trying to slip in to a surface force you can hear them now, "Where are you M.........?"
