Avro Tutor crash Clitheroe/Pendle area

My guess is Avro Tutor according to the UK serial number. Perhaps French?

Any information would be appreciated.

I thought a Bristol Bulldog at first, but this photograph pretty much confims your theory of type.

1 March 1940, Avro Tutor K3249 of 219 Squadron crashed after running out of fuel at Rugeley. The RAF had 394 examples of the type and these numbers are close enough to have been in the same 'batch'.

The machine in the photograph, K3269, was 51st in a batch of 153 ordered against Contract No 195190 /32. It is recorded as being on CFS, Upavon's charge for at least some of its service.

If that is the case, it was from Shotwick nr Chester.(..which may actually be RAF Sealand) 5 FTS moved to Tern Hill early in WWII. A Mr Norton was OC, retiring as Air Commodore Norton.
