Pilots warned ahead of bushfire season

30 Sep 2010

Pilots are being warned by CASA to be wary about flying during the imminent bushfire season.

The regulator says in recent years fire fighting services have become concerned about aircraft not involved in fire fighting getting too close to active fire grounds. In some cases, pilots have deliberately flown in and around fire grounds simply to have a look at the fires.

Naturally, these operations are a serious risk to the aircraft involved in battling the fires.

Where fire fighting operations are underway a NOTAM is issued warning that un-notified intense aviation activity may occur within five nautical miles and below 3000ft above ground level of observed fires.

Pilots not involved in fighting the fires and being co-ordinated by the relevant state fire authority are requested to stay clear of these areas. That means staying at least five nautical miles from and 3000 feet above fires.

CASA has worked with the South Australian Country Fire Service to develop a poster and computer screen saver to get the message across to pilots about the need to stay away from fires during bushfire season. Posters will be distributed by CASA's aviation safety advisors and the SA Country Fire Service.
