More than 315 designs were submitted in a contest to create a permanent tribute to the Spitfire in Southampton where it was designed and first built.

Six entries have been shortlisted and the winning design will be announced in November.

Middle right for me.

My dad used to see em being made, and the Schneider aircraft, my grandfather worked in the boats section so there's a small family connection too.

We have had the 300+ entries on display at SolentSky Museum for the past couple of months.

The shortlisted entries will now be assessed for technical feasability and cost. From those that pass this gate a winner will be chosen by a jury. Winner planned to be announced in November.

The location is currently planned to be on the tip of land adjacent to the old BOAC Flying boat terminal in Southampton Docks. This is next to Berth 50 in the old docks. OS Grid SU 422106. Effectively to the right in the picture below, about where the right hand ships funnel is......

All the Southampton Water traffic will pass by, the new ocean cruise terminal is 200m away. Should be great, and long overdue.
