Hi,

I was sent this photo of some quite odd 'RAF' style wings, they look like a factory mixup or fake to me........

I'd like to help the guy out with an I.D. if I can.... any ideas?
They have a 'kings' crown, so pre-1952 if real, look new and very odd, so I guess they are fake/a mistake.

No. GPR wings differ only from the current issue in the detail of the King's crown.

Several post war airlines had a crown above their pilot wings. I am not familiar with the logo but suggest that it is probably an independent airline long gone. Of course it may not be a UK Crown at all, though I suspect it is.

The actual wing part of the badge looks more like the Canadian ones.

Its definately Royal Canadian Air Force but I can't remember just what it signifies. It seems to be a newly made copy too, as to be in that condition from the 1940-50s would be extraordinary.

you might be surprised over the condition; when James Lay shut up shop on Parliament Street in Ramsey about ten years ago, they sold off loads of brevets they had had in stock since the time RAF Jurby was still operational. All wrapped and pristine

Yes, they are RCAF "Other than Pilot Wings", It was decided by the RCAF that all aircrew would wear full wings, unlike the RAF who have stayed with the Pilot full wing, and other crew the half wing, we also went one step further and gave ejection seats to all trades other than pilot! {It did take some time however to give the back seaters a blast shield so they could get at the handle!} Further more all aicrew trades were paid the same rates , dont know what goes on these days however. Well done to Tiger_mate for identing that. I was going to say that, generally, any military aircrew brevet that has a lightning symbol through it usually implies 'electronics' of some kind.

can you tell me if the kings crown is fitting for this brevet or did the full wings to all aircrew come into being after 1952 (queens crown came into use).

D John, Im not sure of this, will try to ask some vets who might know, but I do seem to remember some aircrew with the Kings Crown on F/E wings, on both Lancs and North Stars. Just as a note, many of the WW2 vets didnt switch even when ordered to do so, when forced to change many wore their WW2 wings out of sight behind the lapels on their uniforms, a practise which continued with the imposition of unification of the forces, when the new wings looked like something out of a cornflakes box, another example of bloody stupidity by our then PM, but I was long gone by this time.
