View Full Version : Re applying to Cathay
jar25 10th Sep 2010, 12:26 Hi.
Please can anyone answer the 3 questions below?
1) Can anyone let me know if it is possible to re apply to CX after a failed stage 2 interview?
2) If so, how long must you wait?
3) Does anyone know of anyone who has been given this second chance and as a result, are now working for Cathay?
Thanks.

MJetR 13th Sep 2010, 14:35 Hi everyone,
Its been almost exactly a year since I was in HK for a stage II attempt. I have submitted my new application and have been waiting for sometime.
Emailing HR, they said they have so many applicants this yearand, only few are granted a re-interview.
I'm still very hopeful and looking forward to a second attempt.
chanteur 13th Sep 2010, 15:56 oh that's no good, as I am planning to re-apply by end of Oct too.
I also read from the paper that CX has only a few cadet places left for this year..
anyway good luck mate and hope they will contact you soon!

Hey there,
When did you apply? How many from your class made it through? Yes I heard around 150 cadets a year, dont quote me, probably a round figure.
I hope they contact us soon :)
dagger19 14th Sep 2010, 00:08 i am still waiting for mine as well.
what kind of improvement should you have when reapplying?
besides having more knowledge, more passion?

Did the newspaper specifically mention how many spots are left for this year? Hmmm...

IMHO, the actual improvement is just as important as what you have to show for it. For example, if you say you have more passion for flying now, how do you prove it? It might be hard for them to believe you unless you have some actual credentials that could speak for themselves - taking some flying lessons? Going to PPL ground school courses? Hope you get my drift.

Of course it is best if you can even attain the licence yourself. But that totally defeat the purpose of cadet programme. I do not know about how how far others stretch to 'improve' themselves, but I believe CX will understand the different levels of commitment candidates have. And it doesn't make sense if you are spending 70% of your time learning flying when you are let's say, a professional engineer. In this reality world, you just have to strike a balance between achieving your dream and sustaining yourself in reality.
I didn't try to compare my commitment, but I try to be more exposed by trying flying simulator and some joy rides. From your interview questions though, I believe I am not quite ready. lol.

I applied in early 2009...there were 4 (including myself) in stage 2 but only one made it through to stage 3...good on him that he's at FTA now!

I manage to dig the relevant news back...and it mentioned there's only ONE place left for this year. If anyone could read chinese, you could refer the below link.
?????????? - Yahoo! ?? (http://hk.news.yahoo.com/article/100817/3/jr0f.html)
holdmetight are you waiting for cx's call for flight grading?
p.s. the hyperlink looks weird but it works. i tried to amend it but it remains leaving the question marks..@<hidden>@<hidden>

Taking flying lessons is merely one of many ways to improve oneself before re-applying. I am not trying to judge what is best or what you ought to do. What I was trying to say is (IMHO) you should have some concrete evidence of your improvement, if CX are to take your second application seriously. Think about it, if your second application looks more or less the same as your first one, even if you have read CPL-level textbooks you wouldn't look impressive at all.

Yes, I'm waiting for their invitation to flight grading at the moment. Only one cadet spot left for this year? I'd take that with a pinch of salt... the article was written in August and I know someone who was just admitted into the course beginning in December, and another starting in October. You never know with these things, so let's just worry about things that are within our control. :ok:

please advise what other ways you think reapplicants do as an improvement besides taking flying courses or getting more explosed to flying. i seriously cant think of what can be considered as an improvement for CX besides these. and it is often not possible if you are not in the related industry.
holdmetight 15th Sep 2010, 03:57 please advise what other ways you think reapplicants do as an improvement besides taking flying courses or getting more explosed to flying.
It depends on what exactly went wrong in the selection, and then selecting an appropriate remedy. That is up to you to figure out. All I was suggesting is that if you want them to look at you again, you should have something to indicate that you warrant a re-interview. It will take extra effort and commitment on your part, but that is what they are looking for - how much you want it. This is my personal experience.
chanteur 15th Sep 2010, 15:00 holdmetight:
right. it's not what we could control at all.
if we are the right people CX will take us for sure, it's just the matter of time.
btw, could i ask a stupid question...is there a button here that i can make quotations in my reply...i see you guys making quotes but I couldn't find the right way of doing it.

i agree that its totally outside our control and i think its not just enough to be the right person. it just take one HR person to think that you did not improve enough to reject and hold up your application. im not sure how HR in CX works but yeah, it can be still subjective and really depends on luck.
enough said but i would like to hear more on how other re applicants 'improve' themselves.
polair911 15th Sep 2010, 15:35 well~~I guess it applies to any jobs or even life in general.....luck, timing and of course your skills.
I had an opportunity to fly C182 to build up hours before but it came at the wrong timing, I've got the skills to do it, just not enough luck. I do believe tho, determination is the thing that's gonna bring us thru at the end of it.
Keep the heads up guys!!
Cheers~:ok:
