I didn't go this year but with 30ml of rain on Friday and only the paved area available it must have been a squeeze on the tarmac.
Please tell us your stories and feel free to share some photos.:ok:

Went in for the day yesterday and yes parking was a little tight, feel sorry for the town as many folk left Friday depriving them of much anticipated revenue. Those that remained seemed in good spirits and much beer was being drunk at the hotel!

Thought about going made the call to a mate who suggested get floats attached first, then decided to stay at home by the fire.

Saw a news report with a pic of a 210 deep in mud - anyone got a pic of the apron area it must have been a tight old squeeze! Least it wasn't dusty I guess :P

I heard on the news yesterday that the races were postponed due SWS, for the first time in history.

Horatio, I'm confused (easily done I know), what's the difference between 30ml & 30 mm? I thought ml & mm were synonymous. :8

PyroTek

people abbreviate Millimetres to "Ml" instead of "mm" - "mL" is millilitres. :8

..........and 30 mm of rainfall is 30 litres per square metre (or 300,000 litres per hectare), while 30 ml is, well, 30 ml - ie not very much. :\

Even got some shots of a young lass going for it at Fred Brophys boxing troupe!

Reminds me of the time I flew to the races with some mates! Lucky for me, in the middle of the drought.

What a shame for those that had plans afoot. Although the Birdsville races well the atmosphere anyway has long since gone with so much commercialisation there now as well as over the top security making it not as attractive as years gone bye. The pix shown here is how I like to remember it, ah the good 'ole days:ok:
Gotta be somone out there who recalls the guy standing atop the pub roof doing a Moonie? I have photo of said person somewhere:-)

Anyone remember the temp tower they had there? Everybody stacked up over the field awaiting clearance to land. And the sh1t houses....phewwweeee!!!:E

Nope, but I do recall the guy standing up there urinating on the people below.

DESCOL Great photos. For those who weren't there you can be proud of our government. There is a security fence and locked gate around the airstrip which as the photos show are vital to the protection of our national security.

PETER Was the guy pissing on the people a politician by any chance?

Here is a picture of the parking on Saturday afternoon...

It was quite tight. Still a reasonable turnout at the pub, but it was very muddy just across the road...

Revitalizing this old thread the Birdsville races seeing as it must be coming up soon.

I haven't been in many years & was asked just recently by a couple of 'drunks' whether I'd fly them up there this year. No can do these days but anyone heading up there in a few weeks & if so what's the goss on the joint? Procedures costs etc.
Used to be great fun back in the 80's but imagine it's a lot tamer these days.
Fred B's boxing troupe, 100 oct was by the drum ( I think around $120 a drum) 3 hand pumps on the whole airport too! Ah the good 'ole days when ATC had a temp tower set up & we all got held at various Alt's waiting for our turn at Ldg. No GPS & Full Sar!!

Any updates would be appreciated for future planing next year

Last I went, about 2 years ago....
Avgas, tank + tanker, Avtur tanker American sized credit limit req'd.

Airservices/volunteers run a decent briefing tent for all your flight planning requirements.

No tower, but special self sequencing procedures that work very well, basically they funnel everyone in via the Race course.

Brophy still attends, foods not too bad if you know where to go, the ground for your sleeping bag is no softer.

Still really well organised.
