New Zealand to Australia conversion

Hey there i just have a quick question, i am currently in New Zealand studying for my CPL i am up to my PPL but have decided i would much rather do the rest of my training in Australia. If i return to Australia will i have to start from scratch again ie ASL theory exams and flight test?? I know theres the Tran tasman agreement for professionals but not for the PPL.

As far as Im aware, the TTMRA only applies for CPL's. If you have done ASL exams in NZ, then they will not count as exam credits over the tasman; you will have to do them again.
On the up side, I believe all your flight time will still count.

If you wish to convert your NZ PPL, then i believe you have to do flight tests. I did some research on it last year, and it worked out to be around the 5hr mark worth of testing, and decided to wait until I had my CPL.

Depending on how much more you have to do for your CPL, and how many ASL credits you've got here, it might be better (and easier) just to hold off, and get the NZ CPL, then convert it.

www.casa.gov.au/fcl/download/ttmra.pdf should give you all the info you need in regards to the TTMRA.

On the other side...if anybody knows where I can get my documents signed and certified in New Zealand (north island), could you point me in the right direction?
I went to the Australian Constitute the other day, and they wanted $37 PER document. Each being 1 per logbook page, 1 for medical, 1 for licence, 1 per photo, etc PLUS $25 to witness the SD form...all worked out close to $300nzd just to sign a few pieces of paper!

You might want to search CASA's website for a list of DAMEs (CASA Medical Examiners). Any of these ME's can certify copies of your documents. The Stat Dec must still be ceritfied at the Australian Consulate for the 25 dollar fee or whatever it is but the rest of the copies can be done by the DAME.

Theres a bunch of them in NZ (and in the N island) so give them a call and make a time. They might not charge anything but take them a bottle of something (no one likes a freeloader...!). And no Obikwa.

Mine was issued 20 days after the application was received by CASA. Add postage and you're looking at a month.

As Dreamflyer1000 rightly pointed out, the TTMRA only provides mutual recognition for CPLs not PPLs.

I just talked to a very helpful guy at one of the flight schools at MB, who explained that to convert an NZ PPL to use in aus:


PPL Theory exam (full exam only, no separate air law subject so you need to sit the whole thing) - $140
PPL Flight test (Nav exercise ~ 2 hrs flight time) -$500 - 600
Class 2 Medical - $110 (but watch out - can be as much as $250!!!!)So all things considered, with a bit of study and practice, you could convert your NZ PPL in a month or so for less than $1k.

The TTMRA actually applies to all professional qualifications so in aviation it is not just CPLs that are recognized but also ATPLs.
