and not forgetting Flying For Fun, whose idea it was in the first place, I assume in Supercub G-WLAC, from Waltham (that right, FFF?)

Julian 1st February 2002, 21:57 I will more than likely pop(ham) down heehee. .Coming in an Alfa 156 (5-seater) )
Must be Friday.....
Lowtimer 1st February 2002, 23:28 I'm in - but unlikely to be able to get use of a club aeroplane all day at a weekend, so may have to drive (boo...) unless someone from East Anglia or East Mids area fancies a cost-sharer...
InFinRetirement 1st February 2002, 23:31 Are retired pilots in cars allowed to come along?
arrow2 1st February 2002, 23:38 Anyone told Dick at Popham what we are planning? Just in case he needs to buy in more sausages! BTW if I come I will be in a PA28R Arrow 4, not a 180!
A2 :)
SlipSlider 2nd February 2002, 00:14 Genghis, add me as a probable, Champ'ing from Goodwood, with Evo7 as nav. But .... the Aeronca Club are hosting the US Classics fly-in that weekend at Kemble, so I will be looking for the optimum way to combine the two.. .Slip.
HelenD 2nd February 2002, 00:21 I hope to make it though at this moment it will be by car from EGHI unless I am lucky to have got the licence by then.
stolport 2nd February 2002, 01:11 add me, either in a C152 or PA28 from Plymouth-seats available if anyone wants to come. .
AerBabe 2nd February 2002, 02:34 Is this going to be a one-day event, or are we turning it into a weekender? How about a pyjama party, BBQ, and campout?
SimJock 2nd February 2002, 02:49 Add .. Simjock from Shoreham PA28, possibly in 'loose formation'with Fuji ?
Keef 2nd February 2002, 03:15 Add Keef, in an Arrow III from EGMC.
Anyone in the area want a lift?
Warped Factor 2nd February 2002, 05:18 I'll hopefully be in the Chipmunk, may or may not have a spare seat.
WF.
Captain Airclues 2nd February 2002, 06:08 I agree with arrow2. Should we not check with dick first to make sure that it doesn't clash with one of his events. They have one or two microlight fly-ins during the summer. I can't do it as I'll be abroad for the next two weeks.
Airclues
PS I'll be arriving in a Volvo 850 as I've just sold my aircraft (it was Popham based anyway).
LowNSlow 2nd February 2002, 16:41 Genghis, sorry, strike me off, I'll be in the land of your namesake (Kazakhstan) then. I can do it on the weekend of 11/12 May or 15/16 June. Shame, haven't been to Popham for a while.
Cap'n why don't you borrow the boy's Cub? Or won't he let Dad drive :)
If it does get rescheduled due to my begging or Dick being occupied on the 1st I can offer a lift to anybody who needs a lift with 50 or so miles of Luton. It's an Auster, Not a 73 so short runways are not a problem
Would you prefer to travel by Auster or Volvo Cap'n A?
Captain Airclues 2nd February 2002, 17:18 LowNSlow
Prefer the Auster any day, just stay away from those Cb's . .I'm free 11th/12th May if Dick says no to the 1st June. When are you going to bring your Auster down to WW LowNSlow?

Genghis the Engineer 2nd February 2002, 18:40 Just 'cos I tried to pull a list together, doesn't mean I'm volunteering to be in charge of anything but me and my aeroplane.
Having said that, if nobody's been able to have a word with Dick by then, I can probably drop by there next weekend for a word with him.
G
Irv 2nd February 2002, 21:12 I read this Popham visit in the other thread and quietly put Dick on major BBQ alert for June 1st over a week ago. He says you're all very welcome, and of course if you need arrival briefs, just ask.
Also, I've started talking to 'nearby licensed airfields' to see if they will offer any student/instructor combinations any cheap/free deal to stop off before and after Popham to allow logging time for any student taking part to be counted towards the 45. It would be a shame to come any distance on a PPL Navex and not log it. Obviously in the grand scheme of things, getting two extra landings cheap or free will not make a huge difference, but every little helps, and I guess when learning, every extra airfield helps too.

suction 3rd February 2002, 03:22 Hi All,
I've added the fly-in to my web site (Unsurprisingly it's on the Fly-In menu). You can register or update your details from there (although it's through e-mail - so you have to wait for me to do it manually). Please also take this as an open invitation to stress test my new site.

LowNSlow 3rd February 2002, 12:40 Cap'n, I have a new Cb detector fitted to the Auster. I look out with both eyes now :)

newswatcher 5th February 2002, 14:38 Thanks Genghis. It sure looks good amongst the other "ordinary" ones.
New Bloke 5th February 2002, 21:46 Ohhh I've been out of the loop a bit.
IFR I remember I promised you a lift at the Bash and I have kept a place for you, also Bogcleaner wants to come and that means that unless Hersham Boy weighs about 9 stone he will have to find another lift. Sorry HB.
waldopepper42 5th February 2002, 22:56 If back in the UK, I'll try to bring the Chipmunk.
Hersham Boy 6th February 2002, 15:00 Funnily enough, New Bloke, I don't weigh much more than 9 stone... but no worries.

bcfc 11th February 2002, 00:20 Suction - excellent site
Just checking if I can get a day releae but very keen, PA28 from EGTE
FlyingForFun 11th February 2002, 02:38 First of all, thanks guys for keeping this thread going while I've been too busy to do it myself.
Next, FNG, you're right - Genghis does seem to have missed me off! I'll definitely be going, probably in the Super Cub (unless I find a well-payed job before then which enables me to buy a share in my own aircraft!)
Now, as for the organising. I said I'm quite happy to organise this, but it seems to have been doing a good job of organising itself over the last few weeks, with some help from Genghis. I notice that Irv has also been doing a bit of organising in trying to enable students to fly in - an excellent idea, Irv, if it works. I'm more than happy to have any help I can get with the organisation, but this event looks like it's going to be very popular, and I'm a little worried about having too many chiefs and not enough indians. So, Genghis and Irv, can you both please e-mail me at deandashwood@<hidden> and we can swap phone numbers. The same goes for anyone else who wants to help out with the organisation. There's not that much organising to do - the list of people and aircraft going needs maintaining, and someone should let the guys at Popham know that we're coming - but at least if you guys who want to get involved make sure you're talking to me, I can make sure everything gets done, and nothing gets done twice. (I nearly always check my e-mail every day, even if I don't have time to read PPRuNe forums, so this should be effective!)
Cheers!

Flypuppy 12th February 2002, 07:40 Is Popham a Customs Concession field? If not where would be the best place to do the Customs bit for an aircraft inbound from NL?
stiknruda 12th February 2002, 21:22 Hershie - the 2 hole Pitts is available but at a price!
Cusco - spoke to young Kent dweller last night, he's skiing with Dad at my my friend's gaff.

Cusco 14th February 2002, 05:23 MdR and Stik
For Popham from my strip its a dogleg E of London city then DET-BIG-OCK through Mig alley.
No probs therefore to pop in to Rochester to pick up Kentish fledgling, while Stik does a few noisy purple circuits overhead and annoys the locals with some aeros.
However if you're who I think you are MdR you're based at Rochester anyway and you might like to do the honours: just a thought: such enthusiasm needs encouraging.
No probs either way.
Stik: my flying this weekend I'm afraid will be restricted to flying the Arrow down to N Weald on Sunday for its annual and notice 75.
However, if there are any hours left (only 7 end Dec) I might be able to come out to play on Sat.
Good job I've got 2 weeks in Florida at end of next week for some serious instrument practice.
Cheers
Hersham Boy 14th February 2002, 15:04 Stik - I'll take a guess at what the cost of the 2 seater is and just ask for a look round the purple monster on the ground instead!
Maybe one of those 'hot and high' final approaches would be enough to scare the wits out of a not-qualified-yet-PPL anyway...? Nah! :)
Hersh
stiknruda 14th February 2002, 17:19 Cusco,
MdR is NOT who you think he is! More paediatric than geriatric!
How long a grass strip do you need for the Arrer?
Hope that we bump into each (not literally) on Sat as the wx looks v flyable so far.
Stik
ps - Hershie the 2A works out at £3/minute wet and has just come out of annual. If you are ever in Norwich we could do 20 mins perhaps?
FlyingForFun 14th February 2002, 17:34 Well done Irv!
For those students who think they'll be able to con an instructor into joining them, or even letting them solo, Irv has negotiated a £5 landing fee, including several touch+go's if you want, at Blackbushe. (Don't know exactly what their regular landing fee is - my airport guide says "from £14.89 + VAT")
So, the plan is as follows:

Fly to Blackbushe. (Get PPR first - not only to get practice of getting PPR, but also to confirm the PPRuNe landing-fee!) Since this is a licensed field, you can log this flight.. . Do a few touch+goes. Because of landing fees, students in the UK hardly ever get to do touch+goes at unfamiliar airfields, so take the chance while you've got it!. . Once you depart Blackbushe, your instructor becomes P1, and you can't log the short flight to Popham.. . If you're solo, you'll need to park your aircraft at Blackbushe, and call me on my mobile - I'll arrange for someone to come and ferry you to Popham, and ferry you back again afterwards.. .
Any pilots who are happy to ferry students, can you please let me know? The more ferry pilots we have, the fewer trips each of us will have to make. I think it would be great to get as many student pilots down as we possibly can!
(Or alternatively, if you're going past Blackbushe, or even based there, let me know, and I'll try to put you in touch with a student who you can pick up on the way.)
FFF. .--------
Dusty_B 14th February 2002, 18:01 I'm a 'probable' for this one:. .It's not my week on the kite...
G-AYDZ - Jodel DR.200 - Enstone.
[she's a four-seater, but other group members may want the spare seats. If there are any left, then I'll offer them out. Departures from Enstone and Oxford (if the pax pays the landing fees)]
FNG 14th February 2002, 18:17 FFF, I can ferry people to and from Blackbushe if need be, but perhaps a better suggestion is to make the Cap available for 20 minute aeros trips for those who might want such things.
arrow2 14th February 2002, 18:28 FFF, I am also based at the Bushe and as long as I can get my Arrow will be happy to ferry 2 people to Popham and back again.

Hersham Boy 14th February 2002, 18:43 Stik - thanks for the offer. I'll collect contact details from you on the day and give you a buzz when next in the City Of Cathedrals. Do you realise the 2 seater earns more than most footy mangaers a year?
FNG - aeros? I should coco! Stick me down for a sesh
This is going to be a blinder!
newswatcher 14th February 2002, 19:02 FFF, you may be doing Blackbushe a disservice! From their site:
"Blackbushe Airport will continue to offer reduced landing fees for single and twin engined aircraft visiting Blackbushe at weekends. The offer is applicable to all private and flying school aircraft.
Landing fees will be reduced by at least 50% to £5.00 inclusive of VAT for single engined aircraft and twins charged at £8.00 inclusive of VAT up to 2700kg.
Catering facilities are available and fuel is available at competitive prices."
FlyingForFun 14th February 2002, 21:12 Ah, well in that case, that would make Blackbushe a nice weekend visit any time! And there was me thinking that we'd got some kind of special treatment from them.....

Irv 23rd February 2002, 16:02 Sorry, haven't been watching for a while:. .The fiver inc vat at B'bush is not meant to be a special PPRUNE rate, - when I approached them I found this is their weekend rate and such good value (includes a t+g or 2) that it is not worth negotiating down - it's just there for the taking, but PPR first.. .Now as BBushe is NE of Popham, is that enough for any student pilots, or do you want me to see what others will offer in other directions? Not much point in wasting time trying to get a negotiated deal at anywhere else if no-one wants it or is going to use it.. .ps: let me know if anyone wants a Popham brief, and also Customs IS available at Popham without diverting anywhere - just needs the usual 4 hours notice to the usual London number.
Rusty Cessna 23rd February 2002, 16:32 Ohhh!
Are we less fortunate PPRuNers with no aeros capability going to be treated to a show by those with such capabilities? Would be nice!
I'm there hopefully.
Whirlybird 23rd February 2002, 17:23 I'm just back from Orlando, where I got to fly an R44 for the first time - along the beach at 300 ft, but that's irrelevant to this anyway. Well, they told me it was just like a big R22, and it is. So I'm doing some hour building in LA in April, and hoping to do the R44 conversion. If I do, and manage to get it on my UK licence by June (every type needs a conversion for helis in the UK, not in US ), then I'll possibly have THREE seats available from Wolverhampton (Halfpenny Green) for the Fly-in; not sure of cost but should be around £70-80/hour per person. It's by no means definite, but if you might be interested then e-mail me, and tell me how much you weigh as I think there can easily be weight problems 4-up in an R44.
I really fancy landing at Popham in a big heli with three passengers. :)
AC-DC 23rd February 2002, 18:10 Flypuppy. .Use Lydd. They are not busy and on your way. Landing fees ~£15.
FlyingForFun 23rd February 2002, 22:21 Just an idea:
Does anyone out there have any real formation-flying experience? If so, would you be happy to organise a formation flight for any pilots who wanted to take part?
From my very brief attempts at formation-flying, it is quite hard work, and I obviously don't intend to put any pressure on anyone to participate if they don't feel up to it. (Unless there's an experienced pilot who wants to brief us very thoroughly first, I won't participate myself if there are more than 3 aircraft involved.)
If the guys with experience of this kind of thing come back and say it's completely impractical for inexperienced pilots to fly in a moderately-sized formation, then we'll scrap the idea! But if the experts reckon it could be done safely, I think it would be fun!
Any other ideas for activities? Apart from the flying in and socialising, which will obviously be the main attraction!
FFF. .---------
Rusty Cessna 23rd February 2002, 22:27 Aeros display perhaps?
Again, scrap idea if inpractical or unsafe.
If we do get to see a fly by formation and some aeros, this could turn out to be a wicked day!

Should I blow the Old Warden hangar dust off my Miles Magister or Falcon and chug on down? Please arrange zero crosswind - my ballet pumps have gone missing over the winter layoff.
Wycombe 22nd March 2002, 14:35 Sounds like fun.. .. .Very familiar with local area (as did PPL at EGLK), but have never actually landed at Popham.. .. .Might give it a go - if I do I'll be in a brand-spanking 172SP, which will find the airfield and fly to it on it's own, only leaving me with those slightly non-standard approaches to worry about!!
FlyingForFun 22nd March 2002, 15:06 Hairyplane,. .. .You shouldn't really be letting any aircraft gather hangard dust!!! But, if you have, this is the perfect excuse to blow some of the old cobwebs away. Can't guarantee zero cross-wind, so you'd better get some practice in first, but hope to see you at Popham on 1st June!. .. .FFF. .-------
FlyingForFun 27th March 2002, 17:10 Well, it's getting closer and closer.. .. .Just to give you some advance warning so that you can make the necessary arrangements: some time around the beginning of May (which is about a month away ) I'll start trying to match people who want to be there but can't fly in, with people who have spare seats. So you need to start thinking about what plane you'll be taking, who you'll be going with, and if there will be any room for extras.... .. .There will always be a few late changes, but it would be nice if as many people as possible could list the following, by the end of April (unless you've already put all the details elsewhere on the thread):. .. .
Home airfield
Aircraft type
Number of passengers
Number of spare seats
If not flying, any other airfields you'd be able to get to if no one is going from your home airfield. .
And, just to get things started:. .I'll be going from White Waltham. Unless I've purchased an aircraft by then, I'll be in a Super Cub, although there's a reasonable chance I'll be a part-owner of a Europa by June, in which case I'll take that instead. Either way, I have no passengers planned, so I'll have one spare seat.. .. .FFF. .----------
carbheatcold 1st April 2002, 07:51 I can confirm that I will be joining Simjock in his PA28 and departing from Shoreham.
Thanks
Carbheatcold
Bob Down 5th April 2002, 16:33 Any further news on 1st June meet.
Just to keep the header in the lime light really.
I'm going to try and do a 'tips for first timers' on 4 Popham approaches - 6 weeks to go - might make it in time!
LowNSlow 6th April 2002, 04:59 I keep checking this thread hoping it will be posponed to the 15th but no luck so far :(
SimJock 6th April 2002, 05:24 Don't forget to check it out at:
Popham Airfield (http://www.popham-airfield.co.uk/)
long final 6th April 2002, 10:33 Still not made the web sites events page though ....
Maybe they doubt us :p
Regards
LF
MikeSamuel 6th April 2002, 23:07 Maybe you don't want it to be to busy or whatever, but is it worth letting the likes of Pilot/Flyer know for their events pages? You could say joining this thread is necessary or something to control numbers...Just a thought...
Mike
FlyingForFun 8th April 2002, 10:54 Good idea, Mike! Not sure if it's too late though... Do you want to contact the mags and find out? Drop me a mail.

Now then. My mates plane is booked out that day (part shared) so thats my lift gone. Has anyone got a spare seat from Shoreham.?
long final: It's been in ink on the wall calendar by the radio man for some time, so it can't get much more official than that. I'll see if I can get it into events, but "I do not have control"
Do you need 'recogniton stickers' available when you book in on the day or do you all have strange tattoos, haircuts or handshakes?
AerBabe 8th April 2002, 17:35 I have a tatoo... but it's not strange (or at least I don't think so). Does that mean I can't come? :(
>>"I have a tatoo... Does that mean I can't come? "
Must... resist... temptation.. to answer. Bromide ... wearing.. off... again... arrrrghhh...:o
Hersham Boy 8th April 2002, 18:32 We should all have PPRUNE badges by now... either that, or I'm sure a few maniacal "thousand yard" stares can be developed. Or would the radio man allow specific callsigns: eg. "Pprune Angel", "Proon Bird" or the suchlike...?
:D
Hersh
I've now made a first pass at tips for the Popham circuit and it also links to the general description on the Popham webpage too. See the second half of my rentals page:
Popham Rentals and Tips (http://www.higherplane.flyer.co.uk/pophamrentals.htm)
Some people are a little bit dubious about Popham because of the final late turn onto R26, but it's mainly psychological. Just be ready to have a second go if you don't like your first try, but follow the tips and you will find it's not as bad as you imagine.
The unofficial event should be on the Popham airfield events page later this week, and it MAY even make the events page of a certain monthly magazine.
FlyingForFun 9th April 2002, 10:25 Irv/MikeS,
Can you please make sure you talk to each other if you're in contact with magazines? No point you both talking to the same mags.
As for the wording in the mags, I suggested to Mike that we try to refer people to this site for details - may as well advertise the forum as well as the fly-in! :)

AerBabe 9th April 2002, 10:27 Can I be 'PPRuNe Babe'? Please please please??
What's this about R26? To be honest I've not checked out the website or anything else for Popham :o Have I missed something important? As a low-time PPL am I going to be overwhelmed, overshooting, and overturned?
Should I get my tatoo removed? ;)
Going to try and pop for a 'coffee' break on the way to Lydd in a couple of weeks... Will post results.....
Irv 10th April 2002, 01:14 Aerbabe - for fixed wing, runway 26 requires an approach on about 240 (ish) then a 20 degree turn AT the runway, but honestly, it's OK!! Reason: there is an Esso petrol station on what would be very short final to 26 if we did straight-ins, so we don't fly over it! You just ensure during the last 20 feet of descent that your momentum has successfully come round the 20 degress with you! (ie: if you just yawed 20 degrees to align with the 26 runway, the aircraft would still be travelling 240 - and I'm not sure the undercarriage would like it - neither would the aircraft like a steep turn only 20' up at low speed) - just make sure you keep a proper approach speed, and keep it as you come round the extra 20 degrees properly, then treat the final 20 feet as if you had been flying straight in all the time!
f-f-fun- doesn't matter if we tell them twice they just stick one entry in their events list no matter.
MikeSamuel 10th April 2002, 12:06 Okay!
We have a listing on both www.pilotweb.co.uk and www.flyer.co.uk
I have also requested that we get a printed listing in Flyer, Pilot and Today's Pilot; so if they do that, all the better!
How about here? Any chance of a little ad on the top frame Danny? :)
Regards
MS
AerBabe 10th April 2002, 13:59 It pains me to say it... but well done Mike! ;)
Aircraft booked btw, so you can have a lift if you like :)
(let's just hope she doesn't go in for servicing that week...)

MikeSamuel 12th April 2002, 22:00 Back To The Top!
MikeSamuel 16th April 2002, 17:58 Just wondered if the fly in was listed in the newest edition of Flyer? Also Pilot, but I don't think that's out yet...Havent had chance to get to a magazine shop - even though I work in one :D
Also a point to note, Today's Pilot include a "Pilot's Pass" in the April issue, which gives you 50% off landing at Popham (yes I know it's only a few £ but I'm a poor student :D) Valid until 2nd June which is handy! Maybe they would mind a bit if everyone was using one on the same day, I dunno, but it was worth a mention...and of course, Back to the Top!
MS
poetpilot 17th April 2002, 09:43 Snot in Flyer April edition.
BRL 17th April 2002, 22:56 Can anyone be bothered to do an updated list of who is going.?
FlyingForFun 18th April 2002, 10:33 Yes, BRL - I had planned on doing this at the beginning of May (as I said a few posts ago...) I'm planning on not only making a list of who's going, but also who has spare seats, and who needs a ride.
Not too many people have responded to my request for confirmation of their details, so I'll have to do this based on the information posted earlier in the thread, and hope the details haven't changed.
I expect to do this over the bank holiday weekend. (Can't see myself having time before then.)

paulo 18th April 2002, 10:47 If you are compiling a list, you should put my name on it. Currently I'm a "need a seat", from Redhill ideally, or otherwise any London airfield.
AerBabe 18th April 2002, 14:52 I'm sure you know my details FFF, but just to get the ball rolling...
Flying from Coventry.
Aircraft PA-28 Cherokee
Currently taking Velvet and MS.
Possibly seat for a very tiny, light person...
Hersham Boy 18th April 2002, 15:50 Hersh would love a lift in a two-seat Pitts from anywhere around Surrey. One of the beauties at EGKR would be luvverly.
Failing this (haha), I shall be making a journey east to be scared stiff by Stik at some stage and taking Hersh's Bird to Popham on the back of a two-wheeled flying machine...
Whirlybird 19th April 2002, 04:20 I'm hoping to make it, but may be doing the Dawn to Dusk the week before. Though that shouldn't stop me, unless funds get too horribly low. I've promised someone a lift in an R22 from Wolverhampton; can't remember who, details are at home and I'm in LA. If I manage to get the UK conversion done, and can get two more passengers, I may take the R44 instead.
Sorry to be as imprecise as usual, but I really can't be more certain than that.
FlyingForFun 19th April 2002, 09:01 Whirly, we wouldn't expect anything else from you :D Hope to see you there. Are you enjoying LA? When I flew there, my comment was something along the lines of "Whoever designed that airspace must have been on drugs at the time!"
paulo, you're name's added to the list!
Finally managed to get hold of the Europa instructor last night - seems that the pressures of his "real" job (flying for Monarch) means he won't be able to do my training until mid-May. So no Europa flying for me for a few weeks - but should have the type conversion sorted out in time for Popham. One spare seat going, from White Waltham, if anyone needs a ride from the London/Thames Valley area.

poetpilot 19th April 2002, 09:30 Genghis - would it help you if people emailed you with type, routing, p.o.b. spare seats, rough times, etc? You may have quite a job trawling through this thread (and the earlier one)?
I wont email until you've replied - I suggest same for everyone else..... having said that, mine's a single seater so it's superfluous really...
FlyingForFun 19th April 2002, 10:19 poetpilot,
Suspect your last post was intended for me, not Genghis, since it's me who said I'd compile the list?
No, an e-mail won't help. The chances of getting an e-mail from everyone would be slim, to say the least, so I'd still have to trawl through this thread - and then compare to the e-mails I'd received, and see if any of the e-mails override information given on the thread. So it's easiest if all information is on the thread.
Having said that, it would be helpful if people's profiles contained their e-mail address - especially if you're looking for, or offering, a seat, since I can then pair people off and e-mail them to let them know. (Unfortunately, we can't get e-mail addresses out of other peoples profile at the moment - but having your address in your profile will at least allow me to contact off-line you through PPRuNe.)
