Four Bodies Recovered After Japan Coastguard Helicopter Crashes
RTTNews (http://www.rttnews.com/Content/GeneralNews.aspx?Id=1397601&SM=1) 8/19/2010

Japanese rescue teams have recovered the bodies of four coastguard members killed in a helicopter crash into the sea off Sanagi island in Kagawa prefecture Wednesday after it reportedly hit offshore power lines, coastguard officials said, adding that search for a missing crew-member was continuing.

The helicopter crashed near the islets that are a part of Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku, one of Japan's four main islands in the southwest, after apparently hitting power lines connecting Sanagi and a smaller island about 600 meters away in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea, sandwiched between the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku.

Four bodies were retrieved from the sea Wednesday evening, while rescuers were searching for the missing person, mechanic Satoshi Odake, 56.

The Bell 412EP helicopter, on a routine patrol, deviated from its planned route when the accident occurred, said transport ministry sources.

Officials said that weather conditions were believed to be sunny and calm when the helicopter crashed, shortly after 3 p.m. local time (1600 AEST).

The crew members reportedly informed the base about 10 minutes before the crash that they were looking for a disabled ship at Takami Island, suggesting the helicopter might have lowered its flight altitude to take aerial photos of the area to locate the disabled ship.
