Horoscope (30/7),

Some good news on the financial front could open up a world of possibilities for you today, Scorpio. Perhaps you'll decide to spend some of the money sprucing up your home.

Until,

I received my pay statement in the post this morning informing me that I had a Gross Public Debt of £26,303 - is this a record?

I know times are tuff..

Not good - I'd get that sorted! Luckily they can only take a few days pay a month back off you - so no need to remortgage.

One of the guys at IOT (on the specialist SERE course for vicars & tarts) was going in as a legal branch flt lt, yet being paid as an Air Cdre. Lucky git. Shame that after about a few months he would have owed best part of £60k! Anyway, he was discussing this in the bar that there is a loophole in which if it's been more than a year (I think) then the money is legally yours if neither party realises the mistake. Or something.

Either way I think Mystic Meg or whoever that's from should go to main building for a bit!

If your mate in the mess has some hard info on that year limit it would be good to see, quite a few of my chaps are getting/have been stung with audits at the mo through no fault of their own.

Mate of mine...(Can't remember the actual figures)

Admin clerk was distracted while processing his claim for a full month of Bog Money, and put the days date in the field for the days claimed.

Lets say it was 17th May 2007, she claimed 170,507 days Bog Money and JPA allowed it.

He got a pay packet overissue of £17,000

Trouble is, he got taxed on it, and they wanted the gross amount back!

And his wife treated it as an interest free loan.

4 days pay a month deducted for 3 years, or so

Lots of Horror, but not much Scope!

Unless it's changed, the onus is with the individual to ensure that each pay statement is accurate, and if not, the appropriate admin staff are to be alerted. The only leeway you will get is not being prosecuted for fraudulently receiving monies from the MoD, "Conduct Unbecoming, Unprofessional Behaviour, Failure to ensure that etc, etc." all cover why it's always your responsibility to get paid the right amount.

The offending pay wallah or admin type that actioned the error also used to get bounced from a great height, but from what I read here it seems that JPA has removed the last vestige of staff being required to do their supporting admin jobs with any shred of accountability

I haven't written a computer program since the days of the Commodore 64, but surely can't something be inserted into JPA that basically says:

IF (Next Month)PAY IS GREATER THAN (Last Month)PAY by AT LEAST £500 THEN 'Get a Grown ADMIN Adult to Physically Check It Before Issue'

Runaway Gun,

This £26k+ is due to a programming error (?), the wording on my statement 'As of July you have a new debt of £26k+. Automatic recovery will start in September. To appeal apply to your Unit HR ASAP.' does raise the question about HR alarm bells going off as you describe - if banks can seemingly do it? In this era of continuous ops it would be good to know that there are checks and balances in place to prevent such ridiculous errors.

WRT the individuals responsibility to check their pay statement and alert PStaffs to inaccuracies, which is right and proper, but the detail provided to the recipient is neither sufficient or in clear English. The good old days of the blue? pay chits listed every occurence that would result in a change and gave notice if you were going to be down. Now JPA has to, on some (but not all), occasions take money from you before issuing it back as an adjustment The NPD line (Non Public Debt) has, I think, happened to most people who work for me at some time. Mostly it is a series of contradictary transactions with no explanation. I have come to the conclusion that as long as they cancel each other out then I don' worry too much about them. The concern I have is that so many mistakes appear to be being made, it makes one wonder how the high pay band for P Staffs was justified... or was it an accounting error?

There are far too many mistakes being made, I would be interested to find out how the RAF compares to other large civilian companies on number of errors.

Re previous comments, I was given an over issue which I identified but still went on for 6 months. I calculated how much I had been given over and above my normal take home but as has been mentioned the GPD was for the whole gross amount. I was assured that tax code would square away the difference between what was taken and what I received, not convinced, new pay statement and UK tax too confusing to be sure so I have no idea if I'm out of pocket or not. PSF didn't understand either! What really gripes is that JPAC make the mistake, so they should take back from me what I received in the bank and then they should have the dramas with HMRC to claim back what they erroneously sent them!! Bet the CS who screwed it up got a performance bonus......

Oh and about paying back at 4 days a month. Wife started maternity leave and after a month on full pay (entitled to for 6 months) JPAC decided she wasn't entitled and put her on SMP - circa £400 a month. issued a GPD of about £3000 and immediately (being on maternity leave she wasn't at work, and JPA now only sends your pay slip to work so no prior warning or chance to appeal......)reclaimed at 4 days gross NORMAL pay - meaning that with a new baby in the house she got a bit less than £80!!!!!

Hmmm I may freedom of information request how many pay mistakes are happening in the JPAC and how many performance bonuses are being paid there..........
