Why don't airlines just charge for both passengers and luggage by weight? I know it would be politically incorrect, but it would be accurate and fair. Practically all the cost of transporting people and things is linked to their weight, so it makes more sense to do it that way than any other way. I wouldn't mind it, even though I'm on the heavy side and would probably pay more for my ticket than the 100-pound woman sitting next to me. An airline can easily show that weight = expense, which in turn makes charging by weight justifiable. How do others here feel about this, especially those working for airlines? How much of the cost of transporting a person or a piece of luggage is independent of weight (I assume there is some small fixed overhead related to each piece of passenger/luggage, in addition to the cost of weight)?
