1959 ICAO locator ASCY

Help please from the resident experts:

Can anyone tell me the decode for a 1959 airport coded as ASCY ?
[ It was in Australia, and my best guess is Canberra, but this does not make complete sense ].

Was not Canberra. The designator for CBR was ASCB. Wherever it was, it would have been in the Sydney FIR somewhere.

CY...sounds like Corryong but it is in MEL Fir.

This was a point apparently served by a Skyways York on charter to BOAC in August 1959 - aircraft departed AWDN [ I assume Darwin ] at 01.10z with a destination shown as ASCY. The next information shows it arriving at ASSY
[ Sydney ? ] at 12.25z from ASCY.

Don't know if that makes any more sense ?!

Possibly Cloncurry, which is now YCCY.

Yes..Cloncurry sounds a good guess.

The distance DRW .. CCY..SYD is about 1700 NM and with the prevailing Sou Easter, a flight time of 10h 15m would give a g/s of around 165kts, assuming 1hr turnaround.

I doubt it is Cloncurry. In 1959 Cloncurry would have been ABCY. Australia only changed to a Y prefix about 10 years ago.

It's obvious init. AS is Sydney FIR and CY stands for the Cruising Yacht Club, so it was probably the empire flying boat landing "strip" in Rose Bay. :ok:

And this must have been the amphibious version of the York ??
