Just reading the NT News about the 2 crashes in one day in the NT. One near Austral Downs Station, and the other in Kakadu.

Anyone have any info on the one in Kakadu?

Cheers

Not too sure about the Austral Downs but we had an aircraft come down at Jabiru. Think the guy lost an engine but got it to the threshold with a ben prop and nosegear damage.

There was also a C210 that did a gear up at Mt Borrodale on the weekend, think it was a Direct Air bus. Gonna be tough getting it out from there

Hey good on them for being able to walk away!

The irony is that they were up here to give a seminar on how to do your own maintenance! :}

When the pilot approached the airport, he crash-landed the plane on its belly, sliding more than 600m along the airstrip. It came to rest in scrub 50m off the runway.

Slid for >600 M?

A Space Shuttle perhaps?

well they always say to fly the thing all the way in to the crash and to do that you gotta have a bit of speed on? i guess?

fly it to the place of landing but touch down at the correct speed, this part is not taught in training these days, just to 500 feet then go around, the last few hundred feet is the important bit, touch down 20 knots too quick and you are in big trouble!! why to pilots come in so bloody fast now? Do they think they will fall out of the sky on approach, or is it the runways are so long it doesnt matter?

Steady on people - a Lancair IV without power isn't going to remain flying unless you point it down, and hold some considerable airspeed. If it touched down nice & level, after a gear up and flap up approach - then I'd be thinking it might skid a fair way. Anyone who gets a Lancair IV safely in from an engine failure has done a good days work!

happy days,

Nice work if it was a Lancair. Many a pilot has had a fatal when trying to get one of those on the ground safely without an engine.

The one at Austral will just need a cut and polish and it'll come good. Most of it will buff out. :}
