Does anyone here know anything more about this Frenchman that is flying around the world in a ultralight helicopter. Looks like an CH7 Angel to me.

He left Iceland today for Greenland.

Yep,

He's called Matthieu, he's based in Barcelonetta in the French Alps, and here's an extract from an email his friend sent me yesterday:

"Matthieu is gone last sunday aboard his Kompress Charlie for a trip to the United States.
He is going to show his helicopter at the international exhibition of motorized flight in Oshkosh from july 26.
Today and tomorrow he is crossing Greenland.
I saved your message so that he can reply to you when he returns to France.
Good flights and good championship,
Elodie"

I flew with him in the CH7 a couple of years ago when I was at the World CHampionships.

He's a great pilot and it's a great machine.

Hello Big LS,

Maybe he will meet one of our customers who is doing the same trip with a R44 Clipper II. He will go to Oshkosh first and afterwards proceed to LA where he will meet Frank Robinson. Yesterday he arrived in the West of Greenland and I suppose he will be crossing to Alaska today

Ok so he´s probably not going around the world then. Some misunderstanding there.

Looks like a really nice helicopter. Hope he will have a good trip. He might as well just goahead and continue ´round the globe since the worst of the trip is over after he gets to Canada.

France to Canada(ish) is not round the world, possibly a fifth of the way round I suppose. Don't get me wrong - this is no mean feat (especially between Scotland and Iceland :eek:
It's like the yanks calling it the world series in Baseball:}:}:}

You want a hero, look at Dick Smith and his solo flights to the North Pole and around the world, all back in the 80s. Before the days of GPS, too.:eek:

Matthieu has arrived in Oshkosh after an epic trip from the French Alps. You can see his route at the following link. He would like anyone to contact him who has experience of flying through Russia, as that is the way he would like to fly back!

French pilot goes home after helicopter breaks down in Russian Far East

French pilot Matthieu de Quillacq, who set off for a transatlantic trip in his lightweight helicopter in mid-July but made an emergency landing in the Russian Far East on August 3, has flown to Moscow on a passenger aircraft.

Quillacq was fined 3,000 rubles ($100) for violating the Russian border after he landed in an unpopulated area in the Chukotka Peninsula. He had already visited Britain, the United States, Iceland, Greenland and Canada, and planned to return to Europe via Russia.

Quillacq was taken to Chukotka's administrative center, Anadyr, but his HeliSport CH-7 Kompress helicopter was left behind.

"I have been trying to solve the issue of having my helicopter repaired and resuming my trip. But unfortunately, I have had no success because I don't have permission for flying over Russian territory," Quillacq told RIA Novosti.

"I can't stay in Chukotka any more either because I don't have permission to stay in a border area," he said.

"Now I have to go home from Anadyr aboard a passenger plane and leave my helicopter behind in the tundra," he added.

isn't it strutted because it's not a cone ?

Knit picking here ... I don't know what construction this tail is (monocoque or otherwise) but the struts do inspire confidence (a la S300 style).

BTW, I've checked the FMs for both R22 and S300 and both tailbooms are stated to be of monocoque construction ("cone" by your parlance ?).

I wasn't nit picking....

As I understood it the S300 has a tubular tail boom...whereas the R22 has conical (cone) boom

A conical boom is stronger than a tubular boom..therefore the R22 doesn't need struts, but the S300 and CH-7 do....

Shoot me down if I've got it wrong though :ok:

Does anyone have any more news about the Frenchmans helicopter? I have been following his trip and find this helicopter type very interesting.

I just received an email from Matthieu. He arrived home yesterday. He say´s he has administrative problems to solve to continue the journey and that there are no mechanical problems with the helicopter.

I´m actually thinking that it may be fun to own one of these Kompress helicopters. I own a Denney Kitfox airplane with the 4 cycle Rotax 912 engine and I love it. The Kompress has the 914 Turbo engine so it´s a reliable engine.
