i was told by BA that my sponsorship application has been stopped because i would not be able to obtain a JAA class 1 as i have (very mild) urticaria. i find this very, very hard to believe as even when not taking tablets, my symptoms are merely a slightly itchy rash. is this really enough to endanger the safety of an aircraft??? i don't think so. are there any pilots out there with any history of urticaria?? if so i would be grateful if you could tell me your experiences with the CAA/JAA medical departments. i will be writing to the CAA on this but just wanted to see first whether anyone else had a similar experience.
i would be surprised if no-one has urticaria as supposedly (according to an allergy specialist i saw) 1 in 5 of the population suffer at some stage. does that mean we have thousands of unsafe pilots out there? no, of course it doesn't. that's why i'm a little surprised.
thanks in advance for any comments/advice/experiences.
i just copied this from here http://www.jaa.nl/jar/jar/jar/jar.fcl.3.1.b.3.245.htm
JAR-FCL 3.245 Dermatological Requirements

(a) An applicant for, or holder of a Class 1 Medical Certificate shall have no established dermatological condition, likely to
interfere with the safe exercise of the privileges of the applicable licence(s).
(b) Particular attention should be paid to the following disorders (see Appendix 18 to Subpart B).
Eczema (Exogenous and Endogenous)
Severe Psoriasis
Bacterial Infections
Drug Induced Eruptions
Bullous Eruptions
Malignant Conditions of the skin
Urticaria
Referral to the AMS shall be made if doubt exists about any condition.
urticaria is mention but it says up the top likely to interfere with the safe exercise of the privileges of the applicable licence(s) which in my case it blatently doesn't.
cheers
