A helicopter has crashed about 25 kilometres from Port Pirie in South Australia.
Two people on board have escaped from the accident unhurt.
They had just left Port Pirie for Orroroo when the crash happened about 8:20am ACST.
The pilot made the emergency landing because of a mechanical failure, but it is unclear if a bid strike was involved.
He called emergency services to report that no-one was hurt.
The chopper is owned by HeliStar, which is based at Parafield Airport in Adelaide.
The crash site is inaccessible by road.
Good to hear no injuries. Is the Helicopter still in one piece?
Was it a bird strike or mech failure??

What chopper was it??
From news reports it was being chartered by ETSA Utilities so im thinking the black 206...? As its the only Helistar one Ive seen doing ETSA work

Not good news, but it sounds like a good outcome to an unfortunate event

VH NDE Would make it the Channel 10 news helicopter... There was no mention in the media of it being this machine which im sure they would be all over it if it was
Any confifation as to if its the black machine? Its hard to tell from my pics but i think the rego is VH-SYC
Whats the damage like to the helicopter? Its all so hush hush, im sure someone here knows more

the aircraft was VH-SYC, operated by Helistar out of YPPF.
The aircraft is a write-off. Both occupants on board managed to walk away from the crash relatively un-injnured.
The aircraft was in the cruise en-route to a job when the accident happened.

She was a nice machine, The picture I posted up was during our last summer in South Australia where she was proividing flights with the local CFS, while a fire was active down Willunga
Passed up on scenic flight in this bird also at the 2010 Clipsal 500. Im wishing I had decided to :(
Not good to hear about the W/O status.
Helistar have always been awesome to deal with. I wish the crew a good recovery.

I have since heard that it was possibly tailrotor failure.
Could have been much worse if this is true.
