This helicopter related document (http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/1_2005_H.pdf) suggests (page 3) that it can be done - subject to the usual DfT permission requirements.

Has anybody here come across this for real?

I don't see why not - I last renewed my IR/ME SP in an N-reg C525.

Sorry - I meant the initial checkride, done (presumably) at a UK FTO.

Yes you can do a Licensing Skills Test or Licence Proficiency Check in an N Reg. I am not aware that a 'check ride' exists within the JAA system however.

The DofT permission needs to be granted and if it is for the initial IR skill test it must also be an approved aircraft with acceptable means of view limiting. Acceptable means screens not foggles.

As well as the DofT approval which is normally only granted for the aircraft owner, the aircraft will need a Doc 7 (http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/srg_fcl_07_A.pdf) approval for the conduct of an initial IR Skill Test

Thank you all.

I have separately discovered at least one instance of a UK pilot who did his initial IR stuff in an N-reg plane.
