Prostate and Zinc. No 2

Since my recent posting concerning the prostate, white spots on fingernails and zinc, the following from a medical website has caught my attention.

Quote : “ Zinc is found in high concentration in normal prostate tissue but is far less abundant in prostate cancer cells. Liang and colleagues demonstrated that zinc can inhibit in vitro prostate cancer cell growth through induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, suggesting that the loss of zinc could be an important component in the pathogenesis of malignant prostate cancer cells. The advantages of zinc supplementation have yet to be proven in a randomized clinical trial. “ Unquote.

Reference : Liang JY, Liu YY, Zou J. et al Inhibiting effect of Zinc on human prostatic carcinoma cell growth. Prostate 1999;40:200-207. Website: www.medscape.com (http://www.medscape.com)

It is not definitive but it’s certainly thought provoking.

P.S As a layman I had to look up the word apoptosis and it means the process by which a cell commits suicide and then changes into something else.
