Does anyone have any colour pictures of this short lived aircraft?

Hi there, did you get any photos of the above?

Or do you have any other info on this particular aircraft or the pilot who was fatally injured in the crash?

I would be extremely interested to see anything please. :O

Copy of the AAIB accident report: http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/5-1974%20G-AYMS.pdf

http://crimso.msk.ru/Images6/AE/AE72-2/86-1.jpg Almost certainly at North Weald on 31 May 71.

I recall it made the front page of the Daily Telegraph, probably on 01 June 71. I have seen photographs of the a/c but don't recall any of them being in colour.

There are a few references to the Owl on Google, including this one which features photos and model plans.

The pilot was a Flight Test Engineer with Handley Page at Radlett prior to joining either the CAA or ARB - I can't remember which.

I flew with him on a number of occasions, on R&D flying, on the Jetstream back in the late 60s.

We were both disciples of NMW who did much to encourage our flying aspirations.

Planemike,

Thanks for posting the accident report. Very sobering reading. Blatant disregard of the restrictions placed on the aircraft during its test-flying phase and the use of a prop with a very dubious history.

I hope the PFA is more diligent these days.

Fw.............

The AAIB report stated the pilot worked for the ARB as a flight test observer.

IFT............

I remember the accident occurring but had never seen the accident report until now. I like you, was rather shocked by its contents.

I realise that the original request is now eight years old, but I see that the Wikipedia page about the Owl has a nice colour photo of G-AYMS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owl_Racer_OR65-2

As I read the report, it says that the PFA did everything right, but the manufacturer and pilots disregarded a number of the conditions in the Permit to Fly. Should the PFA have been monitoring the actual flights more closely?

I used to have a friend who's father had a Cherokee based at Panshanger. We sat and watched the Owl Racer make its first flight. Very sad ending to both pilot and aircraft.
