SYDNEY - The launch of a giant space balloon went badly wrong Thursday in the Australian Outback when the vehicle and its heavy payload of scientific equipment broke from a mooring and dragged across the desert, overturning an SUV and narrowly missing bystanders.

Video here.
The two tonne payloads hits one car which was not occupied and flips it over and bounces over a second which had two occupants.

That's why you should never trust a stranger who says 'Here you go billy - hold this balloon and i'll show you a a disappearing act'

Is it just me or does the start of the clip look like a high school biology video?

As the huge balloon filled with air, it ripped from its mooring and dragged across the desert, crashing into and upturning a parked four-wheel-drive vehicle and strewing debris across a wide area before coming to a halt.

Somehow, I don't think it was being filled with air...

Not the first time that a stratospheric balloon launch has experienced problems, as anyone who has watched the launch of BLAST05 (http://www.ferdyonfilms.com/?p=518) will know. Given that BLAST05's Cassegrain telescope suffered considerable damage during its relatively minor launch crane 'hang up,' it's impressive to read the claim in this latest instance that "...the equipment onboard was not damaged..." (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8650707.stm) despite the gondola's cross-country expedition across the Australian outback.
