Guys

Just to let you all know (present or future) that the latest revision to the medical stuff offered by EK now includes a clause that...if you are long term sick (not fit to fly) but are fit to travel, you are not allowed to leave DXB unless you have specialist treatment to attend (not available in DXB) or you take it as annual leave!

Ha ha ha ha ha!

I'm so lucky

Ciao

I'm not quite clear on what you are claiming - if you are saying that whilst sick you cannot use staff travel then that is fairly common in all airlines.

But if you are saying that if sick you cannot leave the country under any circumstances well how would they enforce that one?

Could you supply a reference for that please?

Spoke to one of the Doctors at EK Clinic. She said that was a load of nonsense!

Not Sure where you got your reference, but the EK Regulations, for long term sick leave, only state that you have to get your EK Doctor to fill in the request for travel off base, and that you are not fit for ground Duties, and then get your Line Manger to sign it, you are free to travel.
This is not unreasonable, they just want to know where you are and that you are getting the treatment you need to get back to work.

Hej guys, when I read things like this it makes me damn happy to be where I am! With rules like that it sounds like nothing more than a controlling and paranoid state of affairs.... and it is also in line with what I witnessed last year while in Dubai... my wife and I were visiting a good family friend who ended up calling in sick for one of his rotations on the A330... and it was legitimate, the poor chap was having a second address in the washroom in his apartment with a good fevor too!! Two hours after registering his sick call with EK, a company appointed Indian doctor arrived uninvited to confirm his sickness and also enquire about our visitation when it became apparent to him that we were visitors from overseas. He had problems later and several phone calls later was ordered to report to some EK medical facility.... now, if I would not have seen this with my own eyes, I would not have believed it.... that is pure control and cattle herding of staff.... the most important reasource in any company is the human reasource... and they need to be treated with dignity and respect not like cattle that have been purchased... or, perhaps that is exactly what it is?
If I go sick at home, I go to the family doctor for a check, get a slip to excuse me sickness and send a copy of the slip in to the HR dept... okay, I am limited to 3 sick days a month and they can be accumulated, but nobody is making it their business where I am or what I am doing....
EK equals nothing more than cattle/camel ownership to me...

DHC,
I have a hard time buying that story. The only way that I could believe your story is if your friend has abused the system and called in sick on numerous questionable occassions or you are leaving something out or it's simply not true. We are allowed to self certify sick for up to two days and then after two days, our clinic doctors certify it for us. Many of us call in sick, and there are numerous sick calls right now, and I've never heard of a doctor being sent to the villa just to "check" to see if the guy is really sick. The doctors that I have experienced at the clinic know that we are being worked hard and have no issue (that I have experienced) keeping a guy sick. Plus, if a guy is that sick, all he has to do is call the clinic, get nurse advice who will talk to a doctor, and a doctor can certify you sick over the phone if needed based on your conditions. That will certainly require a follow up to a clinic or an immediate trip to the hospital, however, it can be done over the phone. Your story is just a little to far out there for me.

Not true!! What is going on in terms of EK screwing the staff is true. But, it isn't helped wirh nonsense like this. Incidentally, None of the EK Clinic Doctors are Indian. The two ladies are from the UK. As is the guy at EGHQ. They were born there, studied there (from KG) and have worked there until they came here. They are excellent as are virtually all the other staff in both clinics. In addition, they don't do home visits. They do not sub contract home visits to other companies. Also, if one of their patients is sick, then NO WAY will they send them to work. You make yourself look foolish. Please recheck your story and come back if you have something reasonable to say.

Sanddude,
I was referring to the ones of Indian Origin as per the previous poster. Let me help you out. There are around twenty doctors at the clinic. From various nationalities. The VP of Av. Med Is Dr FR. The VP of Family Med is AMD. I think that answers your question! :ugh:
