Does PURDAH prevent the reporting of fatalities in Afghanistan or have our fortunes changed over the last 2 weeks?

Purdah should not affect staight reportage. It is intended to avoid inadvertant support for the support for the Government. Is it possible that other news items get media priority?
There was coverage that the injured were being flown to the US. There would also have been a hold on C17 flights to Lyneham.

PN is correct - it's to ensure that issues aren't put out that could be politicised or draw attention away from the election campaign. No fatalities reported as, fortunately, there haven't been any in the last couple of weeks. Fingers crossed the situation continues. But, if there is, it will be reprted factually.

Also . . . politicians and their machinations are FAR more important than some poor squaddie who got in harm's way . . .
God forbid the limelight moves off them, AND then the public would be more likely to ask 'WTH are we doing there anyway'.

I too have been (pleasantly) surprised by the lack of casualties recently. Has the scope of operations in Afghanistan been modified to reduce the risk of casualties in the run-up to the election?

Crime falls 7% in England and Wales
The British Crime Survey and police-recorded figures show a 7% fall in crimes in 2009 compared with 2008.
All main categories of crime were down, except sexual offences, which were up by 2%, according to the police figures.
The British Crime Survey found that muggings were down 21% over the year and burglary and vandalism also fell.
The numbers show that violent crime technically rose by 1%, but officials who calculate the figures say that it was not statistically significant.
The government uses two main measures of crime in England and Wales - actual offences recorded by the police and the BCS, which is a rolling survey of 45,000 people's experiences of crime, whether or not they reported the incident.
According to the BCS figures for the calendar year to the end of 2009, burglary fell 12%, vandalism 12% and vehicle-related theft 11%.

Yes it does. Its a fall in the crime rate. It shows that the Governments policies are working.

Long may the current situation continue.
IIRC there was a similar quite spell this time last year, around the brigade changeover but unfortunately the situation got worse in the summer. Here's hoping we do not see a repeat this year.

VVC - I know it does that was meant to be a cynical question and funny how nothing is meant to be released to show the Govt in good / bad light yet someone releases the crime fighures showing a 7% fall which shows that Govt policies on Law and Order seem to be working.
Working in crime recording - never more true about lies, damed lies and stats!

The planned date for the announcement of those statistics was pre-announced before the date of the General Election was announced and therefore before the issue of the purdah. Therefore iaw established guidelines those announcements are allowed.
