Hi All,

Im contemplating joining the RAF as Non Commissioned Aircrew. Not too fussed between Acoustic or Electronic Warfare.

Question is,

Where are these roles most likely to be based?

I am asking as I would be keen to think about how my wife and children would fit into everything.

Thanks in advance

Ash

Hey, c'mon Ash. You're leaving yourself wide open to all sorts of grief on PPruNe with that first post.

Research your 'contemplated' role.

You'll find all the answers.

What RAF aircraft have acoustic or electronic warfare roles?

Ash,
if you end up streamed 'sensor op' wet or dry, you will almost certainly end up on the MRA4 at RAF Kinloss. I believe though, you won't be streamed until you're already in training. Therefore you could be streamed loadmaster and end up on fixed wing aircraft at Brize Norton, or if you get streamed rotary you will end up on helicopters at Odiham or Benson. Doesn't matter where you're posted on rotary because you'll spend most of your time in the desert!
My info' may be slighly out of date though, it's been a LONG, LONG time since I went through flying training! Either way best of luck.

Move to Newbury and you've got every base covered.

Kinloss, Waddington.. If you get straight onto SAR (Yes it can happen) then Lossiemouth, Valley, Boulmer etc etc etc...

Like as was said before, even if you want to go wet/dry, its not going to happen just because you ask for it. Unfortunately the streaming process is decided by what the service needs, not what you want or are best at.

Then, having got every base covered, you get some odd ball posting like Teddington if that is still on the go.

Ash,
Don't listen to them.
My money is on you going to Odiham.
Cheers.

Odiham, is that with sand or with grass?

Apart from the old and bold who still wear their awarded LM brevet (rightly so) there is no 'streaming' as Loadmaster anymore. You become a WSOp (Crewman) on either rotary or fixed wing.
As for spending nearly all your time in the desert, don't be frightened by those that apparently 'know'. You will indeed do a fair amount of time on Ops in the current climate but it is not as horrendous as some will try and point out.
To the OP, a little bit of online research (rather than a rumour forum) will provide all your answers.

Ash, judging by the way things are going atm :uhoh: by the time you get out of training and let loose on the world RAF Keevil is looking good to be the only base we will have left!
