lmao - yes indeed, the Hungry Duck: on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday the Hungry Duck has "Ladies Nights" when they let girls in, give them free drinks for two hours ... and then let the blokes in...

Address: Pushechnaya #9. Tel. (495) 923-6158 Nearest Metro: Kuznetski Most (it's just outside the Metro to the left) Open: Mon-Sun 22.00-6.00. Entrance: Men 100-200R, Women 30-50R . If you can't get in here, stop trying!

If you're looking for a more ... sane ... bar, the Tema Bar HAS to be on the list. The best thing about the place is the absolutely massive selection of alcohol on offer. Aside from all major spirits being represented in several different brands, there is also one of the most extensive cocktail menus you will find in Moscow - and the prices are quite liberal with the more expensive cocktails only costing around 200 R . For some unknown reason the bartenders hit the lamp shades above the bar every so often, or they give patrons hard hats and hit them instead. Odd, but it doesn't seem to matter after a while, lol.

Tema has a fairly simple menu but the prices are reasonable; the average main course for dinner is around 250 R - or was, the last time I was there. Service is *agonizingly* slow, but it is a cheap and fun place to spend a night, or at least that part of one during which you can stand up.

Address: Potapovsky Pereulok, #5, Bldg. 2. Tel: (495) 924-2720. Nearest Metro: Turgenevskaya. Open: H24! :)

If you want a club, try the Sixteen Tons - like many places, combines a bar, restaurant and club under one roof. The pub is located on the ground floor and is nothing really special. The restaurant - one floor up - has a good relaxed atmosphere, and meal is about $10-$15, beers start at $3. The club part - up one floor again - often hosts bands and DJs.

The place is open Mon-Sun, 18.00-06.00. Entrance: Mon-Wed & Sun free, Thu 100-150 R , Sat nearly double that. Never been on a Friday, so I don't know the entrance fee that day.

Address: Presnenskii Val, #6. Tel. (495) 253-5300. Nearest Metro: Ulitsa 1905 Goda (violet) - exit the station, turn right and walk approx 1 minute. The club is to your right.

Alternatively, you might try Propaganda Cafe - one of the first and better clubs in Moscow - but some days you better be broad-minded :) . Popular with expats (especially house parties on Thursdays), chill-out crowd (quality electronica on Tuesdays and Wednesdays), and gays (ChinaTown parties on Sundays). Don't know if they still do, but they used to have massive nu rave parties every Friday. During the daytime, they serve tasty food and sell relatively cheap drinks. I think meals start at around $5, fresh juices - $3, beers - $3-$4. After 11, the furniture is cleared out, and the place is transformed into a night club. Music: expect a lot of house. The club's interior is very casual and nice, there's a reasonable dancefloor, as well as more intimate corners on the first floor.

Friday or Saturday it might smack of being some kind of dating agency...

Address: B. Zlatoustinskiy Pereulok, # 7. Tel. (495) 924-5732. Nearest Metro station: Kitai Gorod (orange or violet), Lubyanka (red). Open: Mon-Fri 12.00-06.00, Sat-Sun 15.00-06.00. Food is served all the time, except Thu-Sat until 23:00 only. Dance events start at 23:00, and usually manage to keep going till 4-5am... Entrance on Sat after 23:00 - 70R. Expect to get faced!

Moscow is one of those places you either love or hate - I love it, as you've probably gathered! Wherever you go - don't get caught out by the Metro closing! If you're still in a club at 1 am, you're there till the Metro opens again :)

Also there is Night Flight in Ul. Tverskaya. The ladies' virtue becomes easier in direct proportion to the perceived size of your wallet/expense account, but they are all 'on business' so don't think you will get a freebie.

A word of warning though, a mate and I picked up two and took them back to his flat. We worked out from snippets of conversation (I speak some Polish and therefore understand a bit of Russian, and so did he) that they were going to slip something into our drinks at the flat and try to steal wallets and so on. We made them think we'd drunk the spiked drinks and pretended to be out for the count and we caught them red-handed.

We called the police who were surprisingly sympathetic and helpful.

I think we were unlucky, I'm sure most of the girls are not dishonest.

A very useful tip, that. You don't know 'em, you don't trust 'em - and that MUST go what ever way you want to do the "ergonomics". You are in a capital city and don't speak the lingo ... how well do you think players fare in NY, Paris or London?
