Pokémon, the name of that very well known Japanese Nintendo game, is apparently a contraction of ‘pocket monster’.

At dinner with friends recently, their young son remarked he was retiring to his room to play with his Pokémon. Had he said pocket monster, I'm not certain I'd have understood...

Hmm, isn't Pokémon banned in Boston just for that very reason? :p
