Just looking advice for a friend.
He started to fly about 4 years ago and has a SPL but it expires in June this year, he almost has his GFPT.

Does he need to get it befor it expires?
Can he get it extended?
Once he has his GFPT it dosent matter if it expires?

Thanks.

SPL's have the same validity as any other Australian flight crew licence - they don't expire. What makes you think this one is going to ?
CAR 5.12: "A flight crew licence remains in force until it is suspended or cancelled"

On the bottom of it it says "expires June 2010"

On the bottom ? Are you looking at an Australian Flight Crew Licence ? What's the title at the top of the page ? Even a medical doesn't have the expiry date on the bottom, although it does list a specific expiry date just above the PMO's signature.

Two-thirds of the way down on the front page, my licence says "IX This licence remains in force perpetually from the date of issue"

VH-YYY has just described an AVID - those little photo id thingies they made us get about four years ago, that need almost the same security checks as an ASIC but is almost entirely useless, printed on passport paper, and most of us chucked out because you can use an ASIC instead.

Tell your friend, that is NOT a license. His license is perpetually valid, but he will need a new security clearance to continue flying after June 2010. If he only ever intends to fly into little country aerodromes, he can get another AVID, but if he ever wants to visit somewhere busy, get an ASIC instead. Aviation ID Australia in Merimbula are the best place to get them from - they dont charge extra surcharges like CASA do.
