job opportunities in New Zealand and Australia

Dear all

i am a flight instructor in canada with almost 750 hrs and ATPL written

all piston time with MUIFR.

just wondering if there's opportunties in new zealand and australia?

sorry that i am not familiar with the industry there.

any suggestions or advice would help.

If you do not have right of residence in Australia, I suggest you visit the Dept of Immigration (http://www.immi.gov.au) web site and CASA (http://www.casa.gov.au) web site.

As Flight Instructors (ASCO Code 2541-19) and Aircraft Pilot (ASCO Code 2541-11) are not included in the Australian skills in demand list, you may find it virtually impossible to obtain an appropriate working Visa.

Conversion of your Canadian Flight Instructor license could be very expensive and time consuming.

Your chances of employment in Australia as a Flight Instructor would be negligible. Junior flight instructor positions are rare; unemployment amongst junior flight instructors is high; you would need a sponsoring employer; and the salary level attached to any working Visa by the Dept of Immigration (over $40,000 per annum) would make you very unattractive to any interested employer.

Sadly what Tailwheel says is true.

There are some more options though if just coming to Australia is attractive.

If you have other skills that are in demand you may be able to go for skilled migration to get in the door and then look for work as a flying instructor.

The Immigration site can guide you further in this regard. Until a week ago you could have done a course in Hairdressing or Cooking and got straight in after the course but that loophole has now been closed.

You could also hop on a plane and try and propose to one of our lovely Aussie girls :E

I was in the same position as you are just recently, the conclusion to my situation was, I could not get my Aust. residency by the 'skilled migration' scheme as a pilot, it was basically impossible. However, if by any chance i could (which ofcourse I could not) get my recidency by any other means, then I am allowed to work in Aust. and that includes working as a pilot.

Just to give you a bigger picture of the situation, I have Australian ATPL and current ME CIR, type rated and current for the jet that I had applied the job for, and the company proved to the department of immigration and multicultural affair that literally I only needed to do such numbers of sectors for the line training (minimal training cost for the company), plus the salary offered per annum is more than the minimum required by the govt, but they still refused to issue any residency or work visa whatsoever.

Although, around June 2009 (I think) a friend of mine who was type rated on a jet, applied for a job with an LCC based in Melbourne, was granted a Permanent Residency based on the job. What I'm saying is things might change in the future, but to me it seems unlikely these days.

One thing to consider- How old are you? If you are a Canadian citizen under 30, you might be able to come over as a tourist with a working holiday visa, which doesn't require a sponsor? They are time limited, but it could provide an avenue to come to Australia and legally look for instructing work, and then worry about jumping through the immigration hoops later if that's what you wanted. Just a thought!:ok:
