Work Experience?

Hi Guys,

Perhaps it's an obvious question (well at least the answer might be obvious), but why is there such a lack of Work experience available within Commercial operators/airlines?

Understandably, not everyone would be interested, but unlike almost every other profession/industry, there seems to be minimal opportunity to get a look on the inside. As I'm currently in the Commercial phase of training, I'd love nothing more than to spend a day or two on the inside of an airline, being able to observe daily operations, in and out of the flight deck. I'm predicting security constraints may be the issue here?

I have several mates who are currently studying Law, Medicine, Business etc. and have had a selection of Work experience opportunities in their eventual professional industries.

I'm sure there'll be a logical answer, thanks in advance.

i am a partner in an aviation related business and receive numerous requests from students for work experience. I am very keen to support this for all students, particularly high school students, and particularly female students.
For no other reason to try and assist females into a traditionally male dominated industry, and to offer some motivation to someone that is more likely to be a "battler".

However work experience legislation prohibits flying in an aircraft during flight training. Secondly to even possibly be classified as a member of an operating crew you would need to at least have a SPL, which cant be granted until you are 16.

That forces you into a situation of putting someone on the ground in the flying school with almost nothing to do apart from sit in on briefings because they arent there as slave labor (rightfully so).

They end up at the end of the week with a potentially demoralising experience in the work forceand a negative view of aviation.

I know that you may well argue, that is what its all about', but i dont think i want to knock that sparkle out of a 15 or 16 year old.

Many maintenance organisations provide work experience opportunities, which is arguably more advantageous to you if you are planning an airline career.

I agree with glenb.

For a general aviation company there is nothing really interesting for the student to do, aside from ground briefings etc.

I tend to suggest to students looking for work experience to try heavy maintenance with an airline or if they are interested in the other side, to try Airservices Australia for work exp at either a tower or one of the en-route centres. Although I'm not sure whether they still run these programs...

Back with the organisation I did my flight training with you used to get a domestic jump seat on an airline at some stage in the course.

Really? Hard to imagine Flight Training with such liberties...I'd do anything for such a privilege :{

Looking back i,d of loved to be able to wash an aircraft, to be around the industry and its employee,s. Now you need asic,s, oh@s, senior first aid, vehicle accreditation, liceinsing, and a littany of bs to even look at a plane.

Ah, I remember my jump seat experience in an Ansett flight many moons ago. Wasn't expecting to sit up there for the entire flight and landing, but things were more reasonable and relaxed back then...

I heard if you buy a 777 rating they'll give you as much work experience as you like for free!

That's an excellent reply "glenb" & sadly there are too many hurdles now to get over just to observe a plane in action. We at times have work experience gys/gals come thru (few get to go for a fly though due contractual requirements) but they are usually relies of an employee who can be screened a little easier, sad I know!
And yes the world has gone crazy "multi":sad:

I think the boy/girl who used to simply stand at the fence line of any airport & watch planes take off & land for hours with stars in their eyes has passed into aviation history:sad:
Get used to it the current generation of older pilots who got where they are today from looking thru that fence will be the last as we know it.
