I was stunned to hear on the news this AM that the words 'aircraft carriers' (2) had actually survived this far. Dare we hope?

Plenty of jobs-for-Jocks involved in those 2 white elephants, so are you surprised?

Although it is heartening to read that they might get air groups worthy of the name - assuming the F-35B programme survives. But if it doesn't.....

First paragraph of The Times article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7010508.ece):

Gordon Brown will put two new aircraft carriers at the heart of his vision for the military this week as he commits Labour to billions of pounds of extra defence spending.

Headline-grabbing, vote-buying (with your money) politics? Or is he now at the stage he can promise whatever he likes, knowing that he will never have to fulfil those promises? And Gordon Brown's "vision for the military"? Even the phrase fills me with dread.

Second paragraph of article:

At the same time, defence chiefs are exploring how closer military links with France and the potential benefits of an entente cordiale could tackle future dangers with limited resources.

QED.

Maybe they will be able to supply all the white flags necessary, as we will be unable to defend ourselves in the event any attack lasts more than 5 days.

Im inclined to agree, this is just purely political. He knows he's not going to be held to it.

As for closer ties with the French... yessssssssss...... isnt that what NATO is for? Or is it another way of pushing along the idea of the European Defence Force under disguise?

Just as long as Les Francais understand that we may not be able to help if there is fog in the channel and they may be cut off.

EDIT: Apologies to all - just seen there was a thread running already - glasses all steamed up
