ra,

Don't except to save much on that package (even save at all). Your housing allowance will cover a basic 2 bedrooms flat, plus you will have to pay your water and electricity, look to take at least 1000 usd out of your pay for a basic villa. 500 usd is far from covering the school fees over here. If you want the kid to go to a us school, you have to spend at least 1000 usd more a month. Now your 9000 is 7000 at the most, remove the cost of living and a holiday back home, you're left with nothing. Also consider the exchange rate if it applies to you:ugh:
Good luck

RA,
If you offer is in USD per month here is how I see it.

Your housing is essentially 8500dhms/month or 101900/year. That won't get you much here, unless you just want a simple flat (as someone stated before).

Car is 1476dhms/month. Won't get you a big family car but you can come up with something small. However, I would imagine you'll want something bigger with a family so you will probably be out there as well.

1845dhms/month for school. Does that apply all year or just the months of school? If it's just the months of school that's only 17527 total (9.5 months). A decent school will be upwards of 39000. High end schools are up towards 79000. Most guys are between 27000 and 45000 in schools.

Maybe these numbers will help you make your decision. Good luck.

Car: 2500-3500aed per month for a Japanese family car or midsize suv.
House: 120K-150K for a nice 2-3br apartment.
School: 40K-75K for a good USA or Brit school.
These are not the highest nor lowest that you will find. You can save a lot if you buy a used car as many expats have left and their cars were all serviced by the dealers.
All quoted in UAE Dirhams.....divide by 3.67 to get $US

I agree with what Fred had to say.

I see that a lot of people still didn't get how allowances are supposed to work. Allowances are not included in end of service gratuities or in case of termination. Employers basically like to create many allowances which they will not have to pay in various circumstances.

What is important:
Get the biggest total package and the lowest in allowances. Get as much as you can as a basic salary.

Fred are you seriously thinking that the value of your housing allowance is restricting your housing options???

Not at all, I didn't say that. If he is strictly using only his housing allowance, that's about what he is going to get. My point being, is that more than likely, he will be out of pocket with that housing allowance.
