Did anyone else see that show on Channel 9 on Sunday Jan 24 at 1400 about the hang glider pilot who 'surfed' the 'morning glory' weather phenomenom at Bourketown in QLD?:ooh:

Absolutely stunning videography and scenery!!! :ok:

It was good until the "resident" Burketown Indiginee expert in weather matters who now calls himself John, (nee Murrandoo) Yanna appeared. One wonders how much they paid for the privelege of surfing the sacred morning glory.

If a hang glider was around St Helens (Tas) a couple of weeks ago....they could have done the same thing!

You have to get up there some time and see it yourself Foxtrot.
It is just as spectacular from the ground as it is from the air believe me.

Did it in a Tripacer in the early eighties.
They're not exactly the best glider in the country, but we were gliding at best L/D plus fifteen knots and going up at about 100 fpm.
Reckoned I should try it in a strutless 210 starting at Groote and gliding with the prop stopped to Burketown.
The days I played on it were fairly quiet. Ive seen photos of it when you wouldn't go anywhere near it.
I'm told it appears in Spring.

Tried that in a light 206 less than 18 months ago. kept 18 inches but was indicating 140 with about 400fpm up. nice feeling and good fuel savings. Bit eary when on the ground as one rolls over though. Different.

Def worth getting up early for.

Have flown over the area at altitude on the way to Scherger, but never seen one in person...one day!

Yep I saw it and it was great footage.
I have never heard of the phenomenon of the morning glory before either in all the weather/met training through PPL/CPL.

I was convinced this was going to be a thread about early morning sex.... :)

Interesting phenomenon... it never ceases to amaze me what stunning formations the weather can produce....

Here's a photo taken at Sweers Island, GAM Shrike on final under approaching roll cloud.

Used to be covered in SCPL (ATPL) Met by Doug Driver.

Known to occur predictably in Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, and Gulf of Mexico.
