If you add up 1 Jul 09 and 1 Jan 10 Sqn Ldr to Wg Cdr list you get just 46!

For the past few years there is usually 65-70.

I guess this is the start of the rumoured "trim down" of SO2s and above? A little "dicky bird" tells me that the 2010 Flying Branch SO1 Board could be as low as 30 :(

The recent Nov 09 SO2 promotion list also fell short at about 60-70, when the previous years were 100-120.

Promotion over the next few years would appear to be getting tougher.

Congrats to those that are on this list :ok:

Only 46 new Wg Cdr's, how are we going to cope, and as for Sqn Ldr promotions, well i think the integrity of the RAF is in serious danger. Guess all those non-secondary duties will still have to be done to improve the assessments of our up and coming elite to ensure promotion next time. Trouble is who is going to do the primary tasks???? oh i know, those who always do it and so haven't got time for a non-secondary duty. :ugh:

Well I've been out a few years, but Mr Stringer and Potter big congrats

Nice to know there's some talent left

(although that's based on Stringer's cooking and Potter's drinking) :E

There's a DART there too.

Interesting how many Personnel sqn ldr - wg cdr and how few flt lt - sqn ldr!

That looks like a really thin list across the board.

Glad I gave up ambitions the day PA came in.

But at least the only names I recognise are top notch. Maybe the system does actually work?? (Or I know far too few people??)

Only 46 new Wg Cdr's, how are we going to cope, and as for Sqn Ldr promotions, well i think the integrity of the RAF is in serious danger.

Here are a list of Sqns from 2009 with Wg Cdr Bosses:

1 Sqn
II (AC) Sqn
3 Sqn
4 Sqn
5 (AC) Sqn
8 Sqn
9 Sqn
11 Sqn
12 Sqn
13 Sqn
14 Sqn
18 Sqn
22 Sqn
24 Sqn
27 Sqn
28 Sqn
30 Sqn
31 Sqn
32 (The Royal) Sqn
33 Sqn
39 Sqn
43 Sqn
47 Sqn
51 Sqn
70 Sqn
78 Sqn
99 Sqn
100 Sqn
101 Sqn
111 Sqn
120 Sqn
201 Sqn
202 Sqn
216 Sqn
230 Sqn
617 Sqn

That's 36 Wg Cdrs without counting OC Ops Wg and the 22Gp CFIs and Sqn Cdrs. Therefore, 46 per year would just about provide enough for the standing commitments for command with 1yr in staff college, an 18mth SO1 staff tour and an OCU/refresher (that is before SDR 2010 hits!).

Do we really need another 28 group captains? How many groups do we have anyway?

The B Word

I make it 25 stations for Gp Capts excluding the overseas ones...

Meeeowww :hmm: You know what they say - if you want something doing then choose a busy person.

As an aside - as an 'ex' I find it deeply disturbing and disappointing to see so few red dots on the map nowadays.

Boulmer,Cosford, Shawbury, Woodvale & Wyton should be red as each is an RAF owned and operated station with resident aircraft. That said, a 'red dot' normally signifies 'sold' in an art gallery or auction room so perhaps the demise of the RAF is closer then most expect :}

Aldergrove on the other hand is no longer an RAF flying station.

Neither is St Mawgan... Whereas surely Colerne is still open?

And Upper Heyford closed?

How old is that map?

I think 'St Mawgan' red dot is Chivenor.

BEagle "How old is the map?"

From the RAF's current website!!

RAF - Stations (http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/stations.cfm)

When I came to 25 stations for Gp Capts I discounted Upper Heyford, RMB Chivenor, etc...

BEagle
2nd Jan 2010, 12:03
I think 'St Mawgan' red dot is Chivenor.

Not unless it's moved a long way from North Devon.... Anyway, the RAF website's 'clickable map' identifies this 'RAF flying station' as 'RAF St. Mawgan'....

Mind you, any website which still talks about things which 'will happen in 2008' can't really be considered serious!

That map is well out of date!

The Jungle Drums are beating that there were just 30 Flying Branch Sqn Ldrs up for promotion from this week's promotion board - less than half of the traditional "norm" (around 65).

Anyone "on the list" or aware that can confirm this number?

Sounds correct - if the rumours are true then there are none on the list from the secret Wiltshire airbase.:(
