I would appreciate some advice of where I could buy a reasonably good quality hand held radio receiver capable of picking up aircraft and ATC transmissions in the Melbourne area. In other words an aeroplane enthusiast type thing. I tried Tandy and similar but no luck. Something between $50- $80? I saw an ad in an aviation mag that had receivers for $69 but that was a month ago and I don't remember the mag.

Try www.liveatc.net (http://www.liveatc.net) -it's free.

Cheers :ok:

Might be a little more than you want to spend, but I just got a Uniden UBC73XLT for $155 from Contact Communications in Gawler, plus they freighted it free (the normal RRP is $199). An AC adapter will set you back $33.
So far it looks like a good little unit.

Gee Bees at Essendon Airport sell them. If I remember correctly, Gee Bees has the Maycom AR-108 Receiver. See here for the specs.

For a range of other scanners, see here;

Centaurus I bought a cheap Sporty's scanner about 12 (?) years ago, I think it is a JD-100. Picks up civil VHF & mil UHF.

Has headphone socket, external aerial connection, 20 storable channels, and was quite cheap. They don't appear to make them anymore - try eBay?

I paid over $300 for an Ar108 back in 2005.

The reception is poor quality and unless you are at an airfield you will not get much.

Best I can find is a Maycom AR108 (new) here (http://www.downunderpilotshop.com.au/Maycom-AR-108-Scanner-Airband-Receiver-p/1220.htm) at AUD 150 ex NZ. If you are feeling adventurous you could try ebay ex UK (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/OMEGA-Multiband-Radio-Scanner-AIRBAND-PB-WB-FM-TAXI-New_W0QQitemZ400091040651QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ConsumerElect ronics_SpecialistRadioEquipment_SM?hash=item5d2748cb8b) for about AUD 40 including postage.

As mentioned you need to be near an airport to hear airport traffic, or somewhere high in line of sight to the airfield. You will get only get area traffic from other places around Melbourne

Girls I'm pretty sure that while he appreciates the advice, Centaurus has heard all the RT he needs in his life and is looking for the item on behalf of another :bored:

Thank you all for your helpful replies - (with the exception of one fool). Today I bought a radio at Bee Gee's Essendon for my grand-daughter and it works beautifully.
